ETHICS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Question Fire protection professionals encounter a myriad of ethical and hypothetical problems in the installation and designing process of setting fire protection and detection systems in companies. These problems often end up tarnishing and violating societal values, the values of the client and the values of the fire protection profession. There are companies that force the fire professionals to install appliances in an inappropriate manner to satiate the selfish goals of the company (Gagnon, 2008).

Societal values are ethical situations in this context since the public expects maximum safety after the fire protection professionals install the detection systems. It implies that if the devices fail to provide safety, the public will retaliate with wrath for the disappointment. This is because public always supposes that the fire protection and detection professionals must install systems that function perfectly (Gagnon, 2008).In the aspect of the values of a client, the protection and detection professionals encounter ethical situations where they are expected to install a system that surpasses the minimum standards of care.

Thus, in case of a default to meet that requirement, the company (client) might be deemed as ineffective by its customers.Question 2The fire protection field has its values that should also abide by specific standards. These professionals must have a certificate from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) board. This restricts the technicians and technologists under the board to work in the confines of the law of protection and safety (Gagnon, 2008).In the case of catastrophic events, the professionals always suffer professional ignominy.

This is because their clients and the public expect the detection and protection systems to be perfectly effective. In the case of a catastrophe, their professional skills end up being questioned. It is always occasioned by the high expectations of people that the installation of the systems is placed with excellence (Gagnon, 2008).After a significant fire death or loss, the fire protection laws, codes and standards are modified to cover the company in loss. This is because the fire professionals are viewed as too professional to install a system with dysfunctions (Gagnon, 2008).

Question 3The whistle-blowing actions entail alarming people about a situation that is deemed unethical in the fire protection and detection system. However, this process can infringe an employer-employee relationship especially when an employee reports a situation that corrodes a company’s name. Nevertheless, it is an effective correctional process since the employers are always kept at their toes to maintain a perfect protection and detection system to guard employees and customers in the company (Gagnon, 2008).

It is understandable for an employee to report a situation that is unethical. Such a situation can be a case where the company’s fire protection alarm for fire outbreak is not in condition. An employee can thus report the matter to authorities if the employer has been ignoring protests to repair the alarm. This will be a wise step since it will push the employer to rectify the system and bring back ultimate safety in case of a fire breakout (Gagnon, 2008).However, an employee can remain too silent about an unethical situation if the employer has not spent a long period before repairing a defective system.
