Table of Content Design Rationale 7 References 9 Design Rationale This report presents information relating to the use of sound in film. In order to make the report presentable, engaging, easy to read and appealing, several design approaches were taken into account. Page Layout Page layout encompasses the arrangement of images, text and other objects on a page. In this report, a simple and organised page layout is used so as to make the report look formal. At the beginning of each page, there is an image box with a captivating picture so as to capture the attention of the reader. Adjacent to the image box is the title of page to give the reader an idea of what the page is covering. The texts in this report are arranged in column layout. The shorter lines and punchier look of a column layout aids readability and maximizes the use of space on the page. Generally, the shorter lines of text are easier to read, since the reader's eye does not need to move so far across the page before returning to read the next line of text (O'Connor, 2014). At the end of each page there is a text box comprising of key facts that have been highlighted in the page. This text box has been put in place in each page so as to summarise the main ideas or lessons presented in that particular page. This makes it easy for the reader to understand what each page covers without necessarily reading everything in that page. Moreover, each page of the report is marked by double-lined borders so as to make the report more appealing and give it a professional or formal look. Colour Scheme Overall, a light blue colour scheme is used to enhance the aesthetic value of this report. In order to minimise monotony, a darker shade of blue is used in the key facts text box. Furthermore, the images of different colours are incorporated in this report so as to create a sharp contrast and make the report more engaging so as to minimise the monotony created by the a light blue colour scheme used throughout the report. Font The Garamond font style is used throughout this report. This font style is used mainly because it is legible and readable especially in print (offline) applications. It has been noted that this font types uses less ink than Times New Roman at a similar point size since it has shorter characters. With its narrower stroke widths the Garamond font style aids readability and maximizes the use of space on the page (Lawson, 1990). In the title page the font size used for the title of the report is ‘72’. This large font size is used so as to draw the attention of the readers to the topic and emphasize on the aim of the report. In the subsequent pages of the report font size ‘20’ and ‘14’ are used for the heading and subheadings respectively. For the other body texts font size ‘12’ is used. The heading and sub heading font size is larger than the body so as to create distinction, highlight the title and direct the reader (Bringhurst, 2012). It is worth noting that at the beginning of each page the first few phrases of the body text are highlighted in light blue so as to provide a brief snapshot of the topic and capture the attention of the readers.
