The program, which occurred non November 11th, featured: Christopher Rouse’s Ku-Ka-Ilimoku (1981), Rudiger Pawassar’s Sculpture in Wood (2003), David Skidmore’s Ritual Music (2005), Edgar Varese’s Ionisation (1931), and Christopher Deane’s Parallel Isometry (2011).
While the same group of musicians performed all the specific percussion tracks, there was considerable variety within these performances. The first performance was of Christopher Rouse’s Ku-Ka-Ilimoku. Even as there was a large amount of musicians, the majority of the musicians in this piece or participated in minimal ways. Instead the main focus was on a group of 7-8 musicians. These musicians implemented snares, timpani drums, and a variety of wood percussion instruments. The sound was clearly influenced by Polynesian tribal songs. In this way the rhythm advanced through an upbeat pace, as if the ensemble was performing tribal rituals for a war hunt. The pulsating and upbeat rhythm remained consistent throughout the song. In large part the melody and thematic undercurrents were established through juxtapositions between the specific percussion players. For instance, numerous times the snare and timpani would stop playing and the only thing that would be heard were the log drums and mallets. Still, in these instances the song’s high tempo was maintained. Ultimately this track was a powerful to start off the performance as it immediately engaged the audience.
The next song that was performed was Rudiger Pawassar’s Sculpture in Wood. This song contrasted greatly with the song before it. While the earlier song was high tempo, this song implemented more low key and subdued tones. Specifically the musicians in this song used chimes and a xylophone as the primary instruments. While the previous song had a robust and rough around the edges feel, this song was considerably more fragile. Recently I attended a live performance at the University Center for the Arts. Specifically, the CSU Percussion Ensemble performed. Eric Hollenbeck was the director of the program. The program, which occurred non November 11th, featured: Christopher Rouse’s Ku-Ka-Ilimoku (1981), Rudiger Pawassar’s Sculpture in Wood (2003), David Skidmore’s Ritual Music (2005), Edgar Varese’s Ionisation (1931), and Christopher Deane’s Parallel Isometry (2011).
In this concert, they were represented by a viola, two violins, cello and a double bass each, percussion and a concert organ. They also had a section for their magnificent baroque brass. This consists of three players with a different variety of trumpets, cornets, horns and trombones.
The orchestra is acclaimed for the quality of its performances and has established itself. The orchestra tours not only within the United Kingdom and delivers acclaimed performances, but also internationally. Their concerts are broadcasted on BBC's Radio 3, BBC Cymru Wales radio and television mad BBC Four making it the most televised orchestra in Britain.
No general admission was sold to spectators, so lines moved slowly as people found their specific seats. By the time all of the spectators had found their respective places, the lights highlighting the audience began to dim and the noisy discussion dissipated.
The venue of the concert was complementary and enhanced the ambiance thereby enhancing the success of the concert. The hall has high ceiling coupled with smooth flowing wooden finish that complemented the equally wooden musical ensemble on stage. The
