Concert Review concert: 19, March Place of concert: Atlanta Symphony Hall Performer/Ensemble: Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Medium: Orchestra On the evening of 19 March 2015, I attended a music concert. With many expectations considering the good reputation of this group, I found myself enjoying the performance even more than I expected. I am not the only one who was impressed with the performance as the reaction from the crowd revealed that the rest of the audience shared my sentiments. This splendid performance was made possible by a number of things including instruments, settings, choice of pieces, and the performance itself. I was especially impressed with the sound, which projected from the stage to the audience. Moreover, amidst all the numerous instruments the audience was still able to concentrate on the performance and get the message clearly instead of being distracted by the instruments. However, I felt that some of the pieces were given a rather cold and unemotional performance than they deserved. The performers could have put more effort to make the pieces more lovely and alluring. Nevertheless, overall performance was insightful and great and left the audience feeling satisfied with no chance of regretting their decision to attend the concert. If I were to rate the concert, I would give the performers 8 out of 10. The first performance was three dances from The Three-Cornered Hat. The first piece of the three dances performed was the Neighbors Dance. The composer is Manuel de Falla, a Spanish man renowned for his magnificent compositions. The style period represented by this composition is modernity. The composition is based on a storybook that features three main characters, the Corregidor, the Miller, and the Miller’s wife. The Neighbors Dance is a leisurely performance where Miller together with his wife joins their neighbor in a joyful dance. The genre represented in the performance of this piece is ballet. Ballet is a musical genre in the form of a dance involving formal steps and gestures. The feature that stood out most about the piece during the performance was the rhythm and passion that kept the audience captivated. Though the well application of rhythm achieved a soft and enchanting performance, I felt that this piece came out tense and dry. Regardless, it still was a superb display of talent, practice, dedication, and mastery of techniques by the performers. The second performance was part of the three dances derived from the Three-Cornered Hat. The title of the piece was the Final Dance composed by Manuel de Falla. This piece involves a combination of activities during the dance to celebrate St. Johns Night, and finally culminates into the humiliation of the Corregidor. The styles featured in the dance are those of modern period. Additionally, the genre is ballet, which is a dance consisting of a series of well-outlined and developed steps. The dance involved combining traditional tunes harmoniously with the steps and enhanced with well-played instruments to achieve a perfectly balanced piece. Though the performers tried to be joyous, I felt that they did not achieve the level liveliness required given the theme of the piece. For instance, the piece came out dry and emotionless, thus unable to connect with the feelings of the audience. The third performance was Danza de las Hachas from the composition Fantasia para un gentilhombre, which involves six short dances. The piece is a composition of Joaquin Rodrigo. The piece is a stimulating, dance-filled concerto that portrays the brilliance of this composer. The piece represents the modern period, which is the musical era of the 1990s. The genre of the composition is a concerto in F minor. A concerto is a piece composed of three movements where a single solo instrument is followed by a concerto band or orchestra. What captured my attention about this performance was the skillful application of the dynamics, which alternated between loud and moderate to give it a smooth performance. Moreover, the elements of music particularly dynamics and tone produced by the instruments combined skillfully in this performance to bring out a perfectly balanced piece. Another performance at the concert was Gnomus, which is part of Pictures at an Exhibition, a composition of Modest Mussorgsky and orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. The composition involves a collection of ten dance movements, which are specifically composed for a piano. The period represented by the composition is Romanticism, which was marked by intellectual and artistic movement in Europe. The genre of this composition is ballet, a style characterized by a set of well-defined steps to create a dance. Ballet is also an art created by the human body, a technique that can be used to tell stories. The dance is a tribute to the composer’s friend, Hartmann, as the dances are based on his artworks. The piece describes the works of Hartmann in a remarkable piano performance and dance. Regarding this piece, the outstanding element was the ability of the composers to blend the piece with the instrument is a smooth rhythmic performance. Additionally, this piece also had harmony marked by a nice interaction between chords and pieces of chords. Thus, harmony and rhythm combined is a well-fashioned style for a magnificent performance. Finally, Tuileries was another piece at the performance belonging to the composition Pictures at an Exhibition. The composer of the piece is Modest Mussorgsky and orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. The period represented by the composition is Romanticism. Romanticism is a period in Europe where patrons began several movements influenced by enlightenment in the areas of art, music, and the emergence of intellectuals. The genre is ballet style characterized by well-defined movements and accompanied by piano music. The piece is a tribute to the works of renowned artist Hartmann. It represents the gardens of Paris during those days as children played while being watched closely by the nurses. The feature that particularly stood out for this performance was the movement. For instance, the constant dispersing and clustering was magnificent, as it created an intricate movement that marked both a strong and smooth performance. Additionally, the movements were more captivating as they rhymed with the piano to create a spectacle. Read More
