According to Meads (2006), health institutions in many parts of the world have introduced computerized self check-in systems for their outpatient customers whereby the patient reporting for check-up confirms and subsequently validates the correctness that the institution has on them. Meads (2006) further adds that self check-in can also be done manually in the developing countries incapable of introducing such computerized systems. In manual self check-in, the patient reporting for medical check-up writes down the required information such as name, sex, and age and them proceeds for check-up.
The implementation of a self check-in system either computerized or manual requires specific management and leadership competencies. In laymans terms, competencies are skills and behaviors of an effective leader or manager. According to Laureate Education Inc (2012), "Leadership is all about creating change, and it involves establishing direction, aligning people toward that direction, and also establishing change through connecting with people" (p. 1). In regard to leadership competencies necessary for the implementation of a self check-in for appointments in outpatient setting, a leader ought to have the capacity or ability to ensure the creation of constructive relationships between all stakeholders (Zaleznik, 2004). Zaleznik (2004) also notes that he or she should also be able to offer support and collaborate with all stakeholders in the recognition of the problem, in this case long queues, and in creation of plans of action aimed at alleviating the problem, i.e. the implementation of self check-in systems for appointment of outpatients. The tasks are assigned by the leader according to the expertise level of each employee or team member and accordingly the leaders monitor and evaluate the performance of the employees after regular intervals. This way any loop holes can be identified before the occurrence of any serious problem (Leaders Coaching Leaders, 2009).
Scholars of leadership have devised various theories relating to the characteristics portrayed by various leaders (Goleman, 1998). A leader is a person to whom an organization bestows the responsibility of showing guidance to the rest of the employees or team members.
McShane (2003) says that leaders have vision, perseverance and capacity to inspire others. Indeed, in the contemporary environment of cut throat business, the role of leaders and leadership within the organizations becomes one of the most critical aspects of competitive advantage.
Managers get remuneration to perform their work; they plan, organize and direct things. They decide what the task of subordinate is and how is he going to carry it out. They have the power to organize new structures or alter the old ones. Lastly, they have to keep a check on the completion of all the determined goals and take actions if they are not completed.
Some of these include having empathetic skills as it relates to patients and internal staff members, thus taking a people-centered leadership role. Other obligations related to nursing include diplomacy, structural integrity related to job relevance as well understanding the political and social dynamics of the organization in which the health care professional is employed.
Qualities like having a visionary outlook coupled with energy to grab new opportunities help me to effectively compete. Moreover I generally take less time in evaluating and accomplishing a task which helps me to pursue large number of tasks in a simultaneous fashion and hence saves time.
It is for the leader to decide whether he has to establish that strategy alone or in due consultation with the followers, though the ultimate decision that is enforced comes from the leader in either case. Goals are achieved in teams and teams need someone to steer them toward the goals.
‘Social movement’ is considered as an enhanced example of challenge with regard to ‘status quo’. However, it requires open thoughts, open heart and open determination. Having open thoughts necessitates continuous learning and development.
