The present paradigm shift has been the notion of viewing the hospital as a healing community rather than a place of curing diseases. The definition of a community is a particular place operating under laws of togetherness for a common goal. The element of ownership is created when hospitals are viewed as healing communities. Therefore, in Healing Community, every member of the community is mandated to embolden the healing process and exercise the responsibility of healing through actions, words, and attitudes. This paper explores the components of healing hospitals and their relationship to spirituality, challenges and barriers of creating a healing environment, and Biblical understanding of the perception of healing hospital.
To begin with the healing physical environment, it is a component that not only focuses on the way patients are cared for, but also the relationship between the patients or his/her family and the caregiver. The environment within the healthcare systems should focus on ensuring that a good environment is created to effectively handle the problems facing both the caregiver and the patient (Dunn, 2010). By creating an environment filled with compassion, love, and esthetically pleasing helps reduce stress for both the patients and caregivers. It further enables families and patients to better cope with stress and illness at any particular situation.
The healing environment not only emphasizes the vital care for the patients, but also the well-being of the family members. Teaching the family members on ways of supporting the patient remains essential in all aspects. The spiritual and emotional well-being is a fundamental step in caring for patients and creating such an environment remains instrumental. This must also guarantee the medical well-being of the patient. However, there are several challenges hindering the creation of such an environment.
