Six Steps Involved in Conducting a Job Analysis Job analysis refers to the process that is used to collect information about responsibilities, duties, relevant skills, and work environment of a job and the outcomes of the job. Sufficient data is required before one puts down a job description of a given job. The job analysis process requires detailed investigation so that the output can be controlled. This is because this process aids in determining what a given department requires, as well as, what a prospective employee needs to deliver. Further, the job analysis process helps in the determination of what a given job entails including the location, title, summary, working conditions, equipment, possible hazards and the material that the potential or existing employees will require to undertake the job[Des08]. Six Steps Involved In Conducting A Job Analysis Collecting information about the given job The first step in the job analysis process is to collect information concerning the job. Several methods can be used the collection of data about a given job. These methods include seeking the input of subject matter experts, reviewing classification standards and position descriptions, and going through occupational studies. Others include, interviewing employees doing the job, letting employees fill questionnaires and observation. Identification of tasks involved Based on the information obtained in the first stage, lists of preliminary tasks that are significant in successfully performing the job are prepared Identification of critical tasks In this stage, the most critical duties that are involved in the job are listed. Identification of critical competencies This stage involves the identification of all the important skills and qualifications that are required to complete the duty successfully. Linking the tasks and competencies In this stage, the critical tasks that were set aside are matched with their relevant skills and qualifications. Coming up with job descriptions and Job Specifications Job analysis methods often end up with clear job descriptions and job specifications. Job analysis of a nursing position Required data Nurses in emergency rooms specialize in the provision of critical medical care, as well as, specialized forms of treatments to patients who are severely ill or injured. They are involved in the provision of treatments to patients who suffer from life-threatening conditions. Responsibilities Emergency room nurses are involved in numerous tasks. These include; cleaning of lacerations, undertaking blood work, keeping records of treated patients and administering medications. Critical tasks Of all the responsibilities emergency room nurses are involved in, undertaking the blood work is the most critical. This is because patients who visit this area lose blood at a high rate due to the kind of circumstances that they face before coming to the hospital. Further, the cleaning of lacerations is required, as well as, rapid assessment of patients. Critical competencies To begin with, emergency room nurses ought to be fast and efficient in their duties. This duty needs individuals that can work in blood-filled areas comfortably. Further, nurses in emergency rooms need to have been adequately trained with good academic abilities. Linking the tasks and competencies Nurses need to be adequately trained so that they can have the relevant skills to clean up lacerations. This procedure requires near perfection, and this can be provided through adequate training. Further, nurses ought to have personalities that will allow them work in areas with horrific sites. This personality is important because severely ill or injured individuals visit emergency rooms. Speedy, but efficient individuals are also required in the emergency rooms because of the pressure of the job. Job description and specification Nurses in emergency rooms will report to regular doctors. They are required to clean lacerations, insert IV’s, undertake rapid assessments, carry out blood related jobs, and administer medications and keep records of the patients under their care. These professionals need to have high academic qualifications, strong personalities, possess adequate experience in administering medications, and efficiently perform assessment in an efficient way Physician Information obtained during the Job analysis process is important in the following six aspects of the position of a physician Recruitment Information obtained during the job analysis process can help in the effective recruitment of the physician. This is because this information gives directions on where to be filled and at what time. Further, since the information obtained gives the required skills and competencies, employers can determine who their target is and why. Having such knowledge enables the employers to pick the right candidate for the job. Job analysis information helps managers to keep an efficient hiring practice[Adk04]. Training Information obtained during the job analysis can also enable managers to analyze the need for training and development. This information enables employees to determine when training is required. From the output of employees, managers can determine who requires train, when the training should be done, what the content of the training will be, as well as, who will lead the training. Information from the job analysis ensures this process is effectively carried out. Performance appraisal Further, a physician’s performance can be evaluated and compared to a standard, or an output that the employees desire. This standard output is made available to managers through the information provided by the job analysis. With this regard, managers can monitor and evaluate the performance of the physician and appraise the employee sufficiently. Further, this information can be used in determining the skill gaps that are evident in the physician’s role. This process will also enable employers to determine who deserves a promotion and why[Att04]. Compensation A genuine job analysis process with no bias will enable the managers to determine a compensation package that should accompany the physician’s job. This decision can easily be made depending on the nature of the job the physician is involved in, as well as, the hazards that are associated with that job[Moo04]. Unassigned duty discovery Job analysis procedures enable the managers to determine the role of each employee and the extent to which each employee should venture into such a particular role. From this information, it is easier for the managers to point out the responsibilities that are not assigned to individuals.
