Extract of sample "America: the Land of Opportunity"

The current global economic crisis has affected the biggest economies of the world. The crisis has brought hardships such as lack of employment, heavy debts, and a housing crisis among others. The United States is one of the economies that have been worst hit by the economic crisis. As such, most people have come to question the opportunities that are available for the different members of the society. Americans as well as people of other nationalities believe in America as the land of opportunity.

Despite the doubts, America remains the land of great opportunities. It is important for people to recognize and utilize the opportunities available to the maximum to ensure that the society enjoys the benefits offered by the opportunities. America is considered as the land of opportunity because it accords people the opportunity for earning a living and getting an education. These values are important and it is the duty of those elected into office to safeguard these values. Those seeking to be elected into office have to ensure that they advance these opportunities to the electorate.

This is done by improving the living standards of the people and growing the GDP through their policies. Such policies include the investment in infrastructure, investment in education, and investment in the use of technology. America has been faced by a high level of inequality that has caused a lack of equality in the opportunities that are afforded to the people. Statistics indicate that the income gap between the rich and the poor has been widening. The wealth or income is concentrated at the top while at the bottom, poverty continues to increase.

Those seeking to be elected to office must ensure that they create jobs for Americans. Mitt Romney for example has explained his plan to create 12 million jobs for the American people. As a land of opportunity, it is important for the burden on the citizens to be reduced. According to Romney’s proposal, this will be done by reducing the taxes that are imposed on business and simplifying the regulations that affect the business. This will encourage businesses to thrive. The opportunities for business will also be improved through the forging of new agreements in trade.

As stated, it is important for opportunity to be enhanced through the improvement of the education system. In his speech, Romney states his intent to improve the school system. The students will also be given the skills that they need to be prepared for the job market. The improvement of the economy is a vital part in ensuring that the country remains the land of opportunity. The improvement of the innovation and the country’s productivity is vital to restore the confidence that people have in the opportunities that are available in the country.

For America to remain the land of opportunity, it is important that the policies that are put in place do not cut public education to the citizens. The taxation policies that are put be in place must be designed in such a way that those at the top are taxed in a way that corresponds to their income as opposed to tax policies that seek to cut taxes for the very rich as such a policy would only enhance the inequality. The focus on the economy is important for any leader as the economy is very vital for the people to have opportunities to grow and thrive.
