In the session, the IOC committee members were highly impressed with the bid of the Chinese delegation when they were compared to the other presentations and plans for the other countries for the Summer Olympic Games. In order to further push the envelope and make sure that China will host the Olympics, the Chinese government expressed its unwavering support for the Olympics by means of Vice-Premier Li Lanqing reassuring the IOC committee that the Chinese Government is headstrong and is firmly behind the Chinese Olympic committee’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The government and the Chinese people will accomplish everything and anything they can to ensure a successful and excellent Olympic Games when it will be held in Beijing. As the time for the decision draws near, Beijing fell to a near standstill with anticipation. Only one man’s announcement was able to break the seemingly perpetual silence. It was only one man, the President of the IOC is Juan Antonio Samaranch turned their silence into boisterous cheers as he announced that China as the country to host the summer Olympics of 2008.

With the announcement that China will host the 2008 Games, Chinese watching the live telecast of the voting from all parts of China suddenly exclaimed with Joy and delight as they felt that honour and glory would be given to China and its people as they were given the honour of hosting the Olympics. Beijing had succeeded over all their competitors with a landslide victory in the second round secret ballot with an overwhelming majority of 56 from 105 IOC members that had cast their votes. China was ahead of its rivals’ Canada-22, Italy-18 and Turkey-9.

Japan which is one of the countries that sought to host the Games that is also an Asian nation only acquired 6 votes, and had gracefully bowed out after the first round. The opportunity of handling the It was not only a glory for Beijing but also a significant achievement for the entire nation, as being the host to the Olympic Games would undoubtedly bring new business and opportunities within Beijing and throughout China.
