Extract of sample "Organizational Business"

Organizational Business This essay aims to discuss the factors affecting organizational culture. Three journal articles will be summarized and a comparison of the ideas presented in each journal will be discussed. The first article is “The Factors Influencing Organizational Culture in Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA)” (Yahaya, et al.). This article is about a research study undertaken in FAMA to identify the factors that influence organizational culture in the company. The conclusions of the study reveal organizational culture in FAMA is greatly affected by job satisfaction and distributive justice.

Distributive justice in this study refers to the treatment of the managers towards their employees in the organization (Yahaya, et al. 3958). To enhance these factors, it was suggested that employees must be delegated more responsibility by their supervisors to promote trust. Furthermore, the study disclosed that if the employees were given more say in decisions pertaining to their jobs, it will create more satisfaction and generate harmony in the workplace. Another major finding of the research is that job content is not one of the factors which influence organizational culture.

The second article on organizational culture is “The Transformation of Nissan – The Reform of Corporate Culture” by Yasuhiro Ishizuna. This article presents the story of Nissan and how the change in its corporate culture transformed the company (Ishizuna 9). In the story of Nissan, the greatest factor that affected the organizational culture is the leadership, more specifically; it was the President Mr. Yutaka Kume who introduced changes in the traditional views and attitudes of the employees.

The reforms in the culture which he introduced paved the way for Nissan to become more competitive globally. Organizational culture in non-profit organizations is discussed in the article by Kristina Jaskyte, “Transformational Leadership, Organizational Culture, and Innovativeness in NonprofitOrganizations”. This exploratory study examined the relationship between leadership and organizational culture in nineteen nonprofit human service organizations. The research revealed that “organizational culture can be influenced: through the beliefs and experiences of its members, through beliefs and values of leaders, and through organizational practices” (Jaskyte 164).

The articles on Nissan and the study by Jaskyte both share the idea that leadership plays an important role in the shaping of an organizational culture. Nissan’s experience showed how its president became the driving force in successfully transforming its culture starting from the grass-roots level and moving on throughout the company. In the same manner, Jaskyte’s study of non-profit organizations concluded that leaders must undergo changes in their leadership practices to shape the culture of their organizations (Jaskyte 164).

As mentioned above, Jaskyte also pointed out that the beliefs and experiences of the employees affect the culture as well. This is in agreement with Yahaya, et al.’s research findings wherein the employees’ experiences with their jobs and how they are treated by management contributes to the shaping of the culture. Nissan’s case also revealed that President Kume, acknowledging the effect of the employee’s attitudes on the culture, went out of his way to directly communicate with his employees and the other members of the Nissan group.

Ultimately, it had a positive effect on the organization’s transformation. The three articles discussed above illustrate some of the most important factors which affect organizational culture. Leadership and the employees’ beliefs, attitudes and motivations all contribute to the shaping of a company’s culture.
