A Letter about Wanting to Return and Finish the Degree INTRODUCTION This is a letter for a request to be re-instated in Miami University after being dismissed from the school in the fall of 2005. In this petition, I state the reasons that led to my dismissal and request for an opportunity to be taken back to the school. I have listed the credits that I have earned in these years and how they can help me if I am taken back. I have also experienced life in its most direct and raw way and have realized the value of a university education. Hence, I request for my case to be considered for readmission. REASONS FOR LEAVING MIAMI SCHOOL When I entered Miami University in August 2002, I was an immature 18 year old who got the first taste of freedom after a disciplined home environment where due to parental restrictions; I was unable to explore my extra curricular interests to the hilt. Thus, when I entered University, I was a callow youth with no sense of personal responsibility or commitment. This led to my academics suffering as I took time off from my classes and ventured into areas which, in retrospect, I should not have done. I failed to realize the opportunity that I lost by not utilizing the services of the University that had world class facilities and top-notch faculty. In my lack of direction and general waywardness, I fell into bad company and my academic performance went downhill. I saw college as an extension of high school and was unaware of the fact that the transition from adolescence to adulthood happens in college and how well one manages this crucial period in life makes the difference between graduating with a degree and ending up at the bottom, like what happened to me. I now seek to amend my earlier attitude and ask for a chance to be taken back into the university. EXPERIENCES IN CHICAGO After I was dismissed from Miami University, I headed to Chicago and got myself a job there and for the last two years I have been living on my own here. Chicago is an expensive city and living there has made me realize the value of a good degree and a stable job. Back at Miami, I didn’t realize the value of money or thrift and used to spend all my allowance without a thought for saving for the future. Now, I am 25 years old and much more schooled in the ways of life and if I can add, mature as well. I see my friends and acquaintances with college degrees landing good jobs and leading lives that are fulfilling in all respects. Like them, I too yearn for a job that makes use of my abilities and provides me an opportunity to grow. Presently, I have hit the ceiling as far as pay and growth are concerned in my current job. Hence, I want to get back to Miami and finish my degree. DESIRE TO GET BACK TO MIAMI In the current economic scenario where jobs are scarce and the living conditions tough, getting a job that pays well or at the minimum takes care of my requirements so that I do not have to rely on borrowing, is something that I want. Towards this end, I want to finish my degree at Miami and am no longer the immature and inexperienced adolescent that I was in 2005. The fact that I have held on to a job, no matter how much it pays, is proof that I now realize that I have to responsible towards myself and the people dependant on me. Having worked forty hours a week each week for the last three years has given me a sense of discipline and made me responsible toward myself and others. I am no longer the same youth who was dismissed from Miami in 2005 and though I’m not making a pitch as a “transformed” individual, I can say with honesty that my attitude towards life has changed. READY TO FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS I want to major in Sales and Communications. I was a history pre-major earlier, but, now I want to study strategic communications as the work that I have been doing all these years is related to that field. I have earned some credits towards the same as I have been attending classes at Kendall University in downtown Chicago. The fact that I have been attending night school that takes away 12 hours a week while holding a job each day shows my commitment to get a college degree and my desire to excel in my chosen field. I have realized that the quality of education in Miami is unrivalled and by way of comparison, the facilities at Miami University are way superior to those at the current school that I attend part-time. I have attached a mock schedule that I intend to do along with this paper and that also shows how many credits and transferable hours I have accumulated towards my degree. I hope this adds credence to my request for re-admission. CONCLUSION In conclusion, I want you to consider all the points that I have made above and give me a second chance. My dream is to walk up the podium to receive my degree at Miami and I hope that it does not remain only a dream. I am now ready to make my destiny and take my life into my own hands and all that I request for is a chance to do so.
