This study contributes to the literature on glass ceiling by looking at how women in these institutions perceive the various glass ceilings effects. In addition, this study aims to better understand what is happening with the 21st century woman, specifically those employed as administrators in HBCUs in Georgia. The use of open ended questions and personally meeting the participants in their comfort zones will help create a wealth of knowledge and provide a sense of trust and ease. The administrators’ experiences may shed light on the current happenings in the educational system and may bring forth changes in policies to encourage recruitment, promotion, and tenure among women administrators. This dissertation discusses the different perceived experiences of women administrators in the context of historically black colleges and universities, and the subsequent analysis and recommendations in order to better understand the present status of educational institutions towards women. Although they continue to experience the barriers of the glass ceiling, they continue to strive to be promoted into higher level positions in higher education. As a matter of fact, an African American woman became the president of one of the ten Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in Georgia.
The labor department at that time took it very seriously and established a Glass Ceiling Commission. The glass ceiling commission studies the barriers in advancement of women and minorities and tries to remove these hindrances.
