Apart from the fundamental skills that need to be acquired, there are other factors that influence the success rate of a student’s reading skills. One of these core factors has been noted to be the rightful selection of books that conform to the learning style, learning ability, and learning preferences of students (Balster-Liontos, 2012). What this means is that once students are given the right books that meet their learning preferences, they are better placed to acquire reading skills more quickly and easily.

It is against this background that the aim of the study was set to explore teachers’ perception of the book choices of Key Stage 1 readers and their book choices. This is because where teachers have the wrong perception about the book choices of students, chances are that the teachers will inhibit the students from making the selection of books that conform to their preferences and this can inhibit the progressive acquisition of reading skills. This literature review is going to be used as an important data collection process that will focus largely on an attempt to answer the research questions that are set for the study.

Because the research questions were set with the research aim in mind, it is hoped that by adequately answering the research questions with the literature review, a first attempt towards achieving the aim of the study will be attained. The literature review will serve the purpose of secondary data collection, which means that much of the emphasis of the researcher shall be on the need to review existing works of literature that are related and relevant to the research topic. The approach towards the literature review will be to break each of the research questions into thematic topics that will be thoroughly analyzed by the use of secondary data from various literature sources, particularly academic articles and books.

There are four major themes under the review. The first will be to understand the cognitive and emotional factors that come to play when children make preferences for books. The second will look into the evidence gathered by the sources making claim to the factors that come under consideration in the selection of books.
