Apart from the fundamental skills that need to be acquired, there are other factors that influence the success rate of a student’s reading skills. One of these core factors has been noted to be the effective selection of books that corresponds to the learning style, learning ability, and learning preferences of students (Balster-Liontos, 2012). If students are given books that meet their learning abilities, they are in a better position to acquire reading skills more quickly and easily.The purpose of this chapter is to critically review the works of literature that are related and relevant to the research problem.

This is done by looking into four major themes that are directly reflected in the research questions set for the study. It is against this background that the aim of this study is set to explore teachers’ perceptions of the book choices of Key Stage 1 readers. Because teachers often have misconceptions about the book choices of students, students are frequently misdirected when attempting to select books that conform to their preferences; this, in turn, can inhibit the progressive acquisition of reading skills.

There are four major themes in this review of relevant literature. The first theme seeks to understand the cognitive and emotional factors that come to play as a child chooses a book to read independently for pleasure. This means that the first theme focuses on the context for a child choosing a book to read for pleasure and when a teacher chooses a book for teaching. The second will look into the evidence gathered by sources making claims about the factors that come under consideration in the selection of books.

The third aim is to explain why there are differences in the selection of books among Key Stage 1 students. Finally, the review looks into the way in which a teacher’s teaching style may and pedagogical understandings may influence the choices that s/he facilitates for students and the implications this has for their entire learning experience.
