Challenges, Problems and Solutions of teaching mother tongue Gurbetcha The major challenge came by the discrimination and the high rate of multiculturalism .In educational culture Greek Cypriots are taught at school s and employ in oral and writing, standard modern Greek, formal and public occasions While the Turkish Cypriots employ Standard modern Turkish (SMT).Most of the population especially the younger generation communicate in English hence the act of trying to educate them on their mother tongue becomes sometimes is challenge as also each community employs what may be called Cypriot dialect for informal oral exchange. (Weyrauch 2001) Cyprus is an island divided into a Greek southern side and a Turkish northern side. The partial separation was caused by a coup instigated by the dictatorship ruling that ruled Greece in 1974 and a subsequent offensive military of Turkish.77 percentage of the Greece’s population regarded Cyprus as part of the wider Greek culture. Although in the fourth century, the island became part of the Byzantine Empire. (Güvenç 1998) R/G political life also played a large role in being the most challenges that I faced, However the R/G is a country with a democratic presidential system of government patronage politics is practiced widely on both sides of Cyprus mostly on the Turkish side due to the much smaller size, poor and low in economical background and the fact that it contained a political leader (Rauf Denktash) who has been in power for almost three decades. Compare to the other part with highly focused leaders. (Vermeersch 2006) The major challenge also experienced in the area was the inability of women to excess there political, economic and social rights. On the both side it exists a strong though contested and decreasing element of patriarchy (Durnan 1997). Men hold up the political, social, and economic power, and only men are on the strong side of becoming religious functionaries, whether Muslim or Christian. Although women are absent from political offices they are entering the workplace in ah high number. In employment, background women are employed in lesser status jobs with lower remuneration than men are. Women also have a double burden due to the job force they are put into; usually women undertake the role of working outside the house while retaining the home responsibilities (Barth 2008) Despite the higher responsibility and the motivation parents have to their kids in acquiring high education and qualitable education due to the rising level of technology and high rate of innovation with developed educational system many individual have abandoned the mother language because t s considered of no help instead people have opted for international languages like English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, Germany and Spanish hence it has really impacted the teachings and the attitude students nor parents have to a mother language (Durnan 1997). For instance in my teaching experience most pupils didn’t take the language as a serious language ,some may easily sneak out of school during this class hours and some parents can pick the students from school during the mother tongue class due to its consindability of being of no help to then pupils. The low economical status being the causative agent to poor education in some of the parts, there is some improvement with regard to attendance of primary school due to implementation of some adopted measures like school meal s and some small subsidy paid to the parents to allow them buy material and school uniform but the attendance and the enrolment for secondary school children is too low, since out of at least 15 Roma schools children who are obligated to enroll to the level only two pupils end up enrolling (Martin Kahanec 2011). Lack of official s who examine the educational performance of various ethnic and social groups hinder the teaching of the mother tongue as there are no figures to report. Although there is abundance, prove that Roma children generally are behind ass other children. A study done on 2003 suggests that Roma parents in Limassol see no reason to send their children to school since they understand no importance of the education (Miskovic 2013). The majority of the Greek Cypriots are Greek Orthodox, While majority of the Turkish Cypriots are Sunni Muslim.Religional differences also hinders the ability to perform the teaching function in a appropriate way due to the believes and the rules and laws of the religion for instance people on both sides are highly secular, mostly on the Turkish Cypriot side, since its national identity emerged as a secular antireligious ideology. However, the Greek nationalism lastly acquired a strong background religion overtone in the form of the Hellenic –Christian’s ideals, but the impact of religion is on the decline on the Greek Cypriot side (Martin Kahanec 2011). Problem Teaching a mother tongue to most of the children who have been in a brought up with another international language becomes a major problem as you can’t communicate effectively with each other as a result you have to understand the language they are conversant with then you can easily make conversation with them as you teach the mother tongue. However, teaching in Turkish Cypriot Roma-Gurbeties become a problem in that the time allowed for the lessons was too short that teaching and making a clear understanding of the kid is too hard. Poor communication channel and lack of clear guidelines for the MOEC made teaching very harsh due to unprocedural routine on teaching courses. (Martin Kahanec 2011) Solution Due to the job obligation given to the women of working both in the office under high supervision rate and still maintaining the home resnsibosibilities, on the richer Greek Cypriot side, Import female workers probably fom Sri Lanka, Philippines and Thailand to help in maintaining the domestic chores as this will highly help the women to only participate the office chores and it will highly improve the economy of the country. Basic communication being the most effecate and effective way of teaching the new language to any child vocabulary use during classes and the presentation way need to be clear simple, easy for faster understandability. In addition, some building an online Network with Cypriot Roma Gurbeties -twitter, Instagram, face book for direct and better collaboration and communication with them (Colle 2007). With a cleat structure of the course outline in terms of the most effective tools, styles, strategies, and methods need to be laid in advance as this creates a friendly and interesting environment, which creates a motivational urge to the students for learning. In order to comfortably teach the children current knowledge on current, polices, practices followed by other counties regarding the Roma and Roma education should be in hand. The governments need to pass anti-discriminative legislation in the field of education and ensure its effective implementation. As a ministry of education, they also need to implement the laws by educating the staff, pupils, and parents on their rights in education and against discrimination.
