Activity Plan: Pre-requisite knowledge: For this activity, require some level of physical health is required. As such, students with a history of asthma will be given special consideration. This activity focuses on previously learnt themes such as tolerance.Key terms and Vocabulary:Team workPartnerLong Term Objectives:The students will learn how to accommodate individual differences between them and others in society. The students will learn the value of tolerance especially under pressure (this objective has a long term target of peer pressure and societal pressure but this activity will concentrate on competitive pressure).

The students will learn to respect the contribution of each member of society despite their skin color or status in society.Activity Description:Students will carry out a physical activity in groups in the form of an obstacle race. The students will be divided into groups of four that will further be split into two. Each pair of students will stand at the end of a one hundred meters track stretch. Along the track, there will be minor obstacles such as ankle length huddles, tires and a simple block puzzle.

One student leads another blind folded student through the obstacles to the end of the track where they will “tap you are it” the other half of the team and they will go through the same process. . The students, in their respective groups, will carry out the obstacle race activity under strict supervision. It is imperative that the gym instructor is present. Also, the winning team will get small gifts like “cool” pens. Activity Rationale:The concept here is to provide a fun way to explore the importance of meaningful interpersonal relationships.

The blind fold is crucial to introduce the aspect of human dependence. The students, within the groups, will comprise of different genders, race and ethnic background; the aim is to show that human cooperation goes beyond societal prejudices. The obstacles will make the activity more challenging and competitive. This activity is a break from other activities such as watching films that have graphic scenes of acts of intolerance in society such as racial prejudice. Also, the aspect of fairness will be brought out as the gym instructor and I oversee the activity to ensure that the winner is legitimate.

Materials:Students should dress in appropriate sports attirePuzzle blocksGym training tiresBlind foldsActivity Beginning:Good morning class? Please confirm that your attire is well won, fitting and shoe laces are well tied to avoid any accidents. In previous lessons, the subject of tolerance and meaningful human interactions has concentrated on books with literature on heroes such as… (The students should then raise their hands to give relevant examples). However, this class needs a practical example on how to set aside differences and work as one human entity.

Activity Middle:I will divide the students into groups of four, two girls and two boys (it will not be evident to the students that the groups are heterogeneous in terms of race and ethnicity). Within the group, the students will further split into two. Each pair of students will stand at opposite ends of the 100 meter race track. One student from each pair will be blindfolded and the un-blindfolded student will lead them through the obstacles (huddles, jumping through tires, and finally arranging a block puzzle) to the end of the race track.

The fastest team to complete these activities wins.Activity Closing:Seeing as this is a fast moving activity ample time will be left for the students to discuss what they have learnt from the activity. This will be done while the students are still on the race track to capture their ideas while they are fresh. Finally, there will be a follow up activity in the form of homework with the topic “discuss the disadvantages of holding on to individual differences such as race, sex and social status to human development”.
