Thus, a lot of community members have actively participated in the promotion of education in the state by taking their children to public schools. Besides, many have been directly involved in the running of schools by the formation, support and sustainability of Parent-Teachers’ Associations (PTAs) and local School District Boards through which they have helped in identifying and addressing various challenges facing public learning institutions within this state. Moreover, a good number of community members have financially supported these institutions.
A part from levying of fees from parents, public schools receive financial support from the government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), faith-based organizations and individual well wishers. Some of this money comes in the form of capitation, scholarships and bursaries. Therefore, they may help the administrators of these institutions to meet their expenditure. However, despite such huge funding, many schools still find it extremely difficult to manage their budget. This is because they have lots of expenses to incur. This money is used in catering for tuition services and the acquisition of reading materials such as books, journals, laboratory equipments, apparatus and chemicals. Other important areas that need financing include, but not limited to office supplies; tax payment; vehicle acquisition, registration, repair and maintenance; field trips; medical bills; vacation; extra-curricular activities; boarding facilities; food; membership fees; newspaper, magazine and TV subscriptions; and charitable contributions (Vickrey,.1996).
This is a clear proof that these institutions are overburdened with expenses. They are all crucial and can not be forgone at all costs.
