During the first time that I had the chance to visit this famous Chinese landmark, I was overwhelmed. I felt small in comparison to this towering structure showcasing the grandeur, creativity, and even the strategic construction of the walls which were built to secure the country from the barbarians. With the current technological advancements, I tried to look back in an era where buildings are erected through hands and much simpler machines. After travelling to other countries, I become a witness as to how modernity changes the phase of infrastructure development. Along with the rapid advancement of science, new technologies are introduced together with better materials which gave way to the creation of taller, more astounding, and beautiful buildings. However, I still often look back at the Great Wall as it provides me with the fondest memories and my huge ambitions of becoming an engineer. I often wish I can build something as significant and distinct as a legacy to world of my existence. I have long admitted my incapacity of building my own Great Wall to be remembered for. However, I remain committed to my aim of building my legacy through pursuing every opportunity to further my strengths and competencies which include seeking admission to graduate school. I dream that someday, I will be able to utilize my knowledge and skills through the aid of technological advancements to erect infrastructure which will be mark my contribution to the world. It might not be as grand, popular, and even remarkable as the Great Wall but it will stand as the fulfillment of my aspirations and will serve as witness to the long years I have labored in acquiring knowledge and skills in the field of engineering. The last four years in my life that I spent in the University College of London marks my continued voyage of finding more about the application of technical and scientific knowledge in the design of efficient processes, machines, and systems. These years have introduced me with the basic concepts of engineering but even increased my interest in acquiring the specialized knowledge and skills that I need to gear me with in order to become a civil engineer. However, I also believed that professional knowledge is inadequate but should go hand in hand with application. Inside our classroom, I have painstaking learned about combining science and technical theories for the development of new products, determine the most efficient way of production, maintaining product quality, generate specification of machineries, and analyze design among others. These are generated through my active participation courses including mathematics, physics, and chemistry. I have applied these techniques through the projects I have worked on, often with teams which enabled me to develop and improve my ideas. I have always tried to supplement the theories in classrooms through applying them in the real world through developing different projects for my personal development. China’s ascent to the world economy further motivates me to pursue this ambition given the fact that the Sleeping Giant has awaken from its slumber and is in need of people to revive its glorious years. I believe that more than ever, my country will need civil engineers to build infrastructure to support the rapid economic development. I believe that the accomplishment of a goal hinges from the amount of passion that a person have. This is stressed by the French philosopher Denis Diderot: “Only passions, great passions can elevate the soul to great things.” It is my passion which will sustain me in continuing my quest in pursuing a master’s degree in engineering. This passion will enable me to keep going amidst the hardship, inspire me to do more, and enable me to attain things which seem to be beyond my capability. Having survived and excelled in the past four years in my engineering course, I am now ready for the bigger challenge of specializing in civil engineering. I believe that my mathematical skill is indispensable in this field. However, realizing how computers are now programmed in order to run equations, I am also working towards learning to use different engineering software like AutoCAD. My perseverance in learning the English language enables me to explore engineering concepts through recent books. After being uprooted in my home country and transplanted in a culture which is very much different from my own, I can say that I have mastered the art of coping with changes and challenges. The first years of adjustment was hard but they all made me more mature and less discriminating. Aside from enhancing my knowledge in various fields, I have developed the much needed social skills. As construction of buildings and infrastructure takes a “group” approach, I believe that I now have the flexibility and ability to work in a team with diverse members. The Great Wall of China is one of my inspirations in pursuing a master’s degree in engineering. Through the time, this structure has stood proud becoming a reminder of how a Chinese dynasty successfully protected itself from invaders. For me, the modernity fails to erode its glory. I believe that building a career in engineering is much like building a Great Wall in my life. It requires commitment, dedication, and passion but I am confident that through all I went through in life I am prepared for the challenge of higher learning. Read More
