of the of the Concerned English 27 February In Darkness by Agnieszka Holland In Darkness is a gripping and moving Polish drama film directed by Agnieszka Holland. It is a Holocaust film, moving around a Polish sewer worker and a part time burglar, Lepold Socha. The liquidation of ghettos extends to Socha and his somewhat young friend and sidekick, Szczepeck, new avenues for looting and stealing. However, later on, seeing the misery of Jews, Socha undergoes a change of heart and ends up helping the Jews escape the Nazi persecution at Lvov.

The movie do extends ample information about Holocaust. However, more than teaching the audience, it makes them feel and empathize. It makes the audience pity the persecuted, hate the villainous and appreciate and praise the brave and courageous. The movie is replete with suspense and horror and many a times it comes out as being deeply moving. The pivotal theme in the movie is the ethical awakening of Socha, who gives up his yearning for opportunistic pecuniary gains, to emerge as a hero for the weak and the persecuted.

Doing so did not happen to be easy for Socha as time and again he is required to get over the skepticism and doubts of those who were the closest to him. It goes without saying that the visual dichotomy between the world in the sewers and the life above them is handled immaculately in this movie. In conclusion, In Darkness is a warm, moving and touching movie. Works CitedIMDB. In Darkness. 2011. 27 February 2012 .
