All to be tall The min strength of the article is that it emphasises on the aspect that tall men have an advantage especially when it comes to securing employment. However, the main weakness of the article is that it is difficult for the author to convince people that an artificial surgery to lengthen the height of a person can be induced successfully given that it is widely believed that if a human body has reached the maturity stage of growth, it may not grow further. The author claims that the problem short height can be rectified if a vertically challenged person undergoes an artificial lengthening exercise. As such, this paper seeks to critically evaluate the authenticity of the author’s claims and it will highlight the major weaknesses and strengths of the article. To illustrate his claim that the height of a person can be extended, the author states that some people are spending as much as $80 000 to have their legs lengthened. However, the most surprising thing is that a person who undergoes this artificial therapy to lengthen his legs is that he will only gain three inches. The pain experienced while undergoing this exercise is “extraordinary,” (Kita, 709). Surely, it is hard to believe that a person can sacrifice such a fortune to experience the severe pain that is associated with the lengthening exercise of legs only to gain an additional three inches to his height. The author’s claim is hard to believe and this is one of the major weaknesses of his article. Under normal circumstances, people seek medication when they have different healthcare problems. It may not be feasible for a healthy person to fork out such large sums of money to undergo a surgery that is meant to lengthen his height as this may turn out to be a nightmare if there are some complications experienced when the surgery has been performed. One of the major strengths of the article is that it captures the widely held perception by many people that tall men in particular are more attractive than short ones especially to women. The author uses superlative words to describe tall men in the article. For instance, Kita (710) quotes the survey by Henry Biller which shows that tall men are “more mature, uninhibited, positive, mature, confident, masculine, secure, dominant, optimistic and outgoing.” The author also supports this claim by highlighting that the majority of women in Hollywood films admire tall men. In different societies, tall men are regarded as role models and they are also portrayed as the epitome of success. Outgoing people also believe that tall men are charming and many beautiful ladies enjoy the company of these people. It can be seen that this is one of the major strengths of the article since it addresses the commonly held belief by many people in different societies. HHH The other strength of the article is that it highlights the negative impacts of undergoing this particular surgery. The author claims that there is “a 25 % complication rate from this surgery with the most frequent problem being pin site infection,” (Kita, 712). This is a very bad scenario given that this surgery can lead to permanent disability if it is not properly performed. Indeed, the author suggests that it is possible to undergo an artificial surgery to lengthen the legs but the magnitude through which a person will go is quite large. Apart from the large sums of money spent for this surgery to be performed, the person involved will undergo severe pain and it may lead to a permanent injury. The author therefore makes it clear that it is not advisable for healthy people to undergo this surgery given that it may negatively impact on his or her health. Given such a scenario, it can be seen that more money will be spent on physiotherapy to correct the unprecedented problem likely to be experienced as a result of this surgery. This article shows a high degree of medical research and it can be said that it is based on factual information. This is a major strength given that the author solicited for ideas from professionals who have a wealth of knowledge in the medical field. The author states that this particular surgery is often performed on people who have deformities and it is helpful in correcting the problem related to short height. The author states that some doctors state that there is risk related to this surgery that is meant to lengthen the limps of a person. Kita also balances his argument by claiming that people who undergo this surgery would never be 100 % as before being operated. For instance, Turner who underwent this surgery states that he could not run fast and he experiences pain when the weather is damp (Kita, 713). Professional health bodies do not endorse this practice since they are also not 100 % confident about the outcome of the surgery. However, a close analysis of the article also shows that this article has got some fallacies given that there is a certain period where the human bones develop especially during the early ages. Biologically, the human bones cannot continue to grow when a person is regarded as an adult. The author claims that Conran is undergoing this therapy at the age of 45 and this defies logic since this person is now regarded as an adult who has fully developed in terms of biological growth of his bones. Young people’s bones heal comparatively faster than old people. Over and above, it can be seen that a critical analysis of the article by Kita shows that the aspect of height among people is considered as very important. For instance, the author claims that vertically challenged men have disadvantages compared to tall men in terms of seeking employment. The major strength of the article is that it is based on sound medical research and it is full of facts than opinions. To a larger extent, it can be seen that the article is enlightening since the people are given the facts about this surgery and its implications. However, the notable weakness of the article is that it may be difficult for people to believe that there are some people who can spend such a large sum of money to undergo a surgery that is specifically meant to increase the height of an otherwise healthy person.
