Without giving in to self-pity, or sentimentality, Ellis manages to convey his deep love and respect for his father. The essay is a deeply moving story and is sure to touch the hearts of all readers.
The intended audience for this essay is readers afflicted by AIDS, and those who are in close contact with them. Ellis is aware of the stigma associated with AIDS: “no one spoke about AIDS --- my family has pleaded with me not to tell the truth” (Ellis, 30).
