Genres of Film The genres that appeal to me the most are horror, science fiction, drama, and adventure. Drama films, like “Crash” by Paul Haggis, portray societal issues like race and gender. I also like action-adventure genre, like “2012”. Such movies show that the Hollywood industry can expertly and artistically use science, history and archeology, to produce an amazing work of art that can excite the whole population. The genre of drama also shows human struggle, especially struggle of the labor class.

Films like “Erin Brokovich” (2000) make us learn that it is always the labor class of people that has to suffer despite America being a democratic country. This is because of the low socio-economic status of that class which is the basic reason of its plight. “El Contrato” is a documentary film directed by Min Sook Lee, which talks about social problems of immigrants in the USA. I also like the genre of horror. For example, “Scream” by Wes Craven is a horror movie about a pair of psychic friends who killed young nubile girls for fun’s sake.

Some film genres that I am not interested in are comedy and war. I think that comedy today is not up to the mark. Special effects are as important as a strong plot and cast. 2012 is a final action-adventure, and a thrilled journey of human survival decorated with modern cinematography and heart-throbbing special effects, which enhance its importance as an action-adventure film. Critical reviews are important in selecting a film to watch as they tell us about the film’s rating from a common man’s perspective.
