The women in Trifles made the right decision to hide the clues from the men because the action was aligned with the ideas men in that period had about women, yet at the same time it strengthened the beliefs women had about themselves.
Because the play was written at a period where males were still considered superior to females, it was only to be expected that the male characters in Trifle represent this kind of thinking. For example, at the beginning of the play, the protagonists are in the kitchen, the room within a house that is most typically associated with women. While in here, they comment on Mrs. Wright’s housekeeping skills, using their observation of the kitchen as a basis. (982) When Mrs. Hale remarks that it is hard to keep a farm, the men do not take her seriously. When the county attorney discover Mrs. Wright’s fruit preserve and calls it “a mess” (982), the two women are quick to come to Mrs. Wright’s defense. Throughout the play, it would be apparent to the audience that the men did not take the women’s opinions very seriously. Although the county attorney or sheriff may pause for a second and even go as far as to bring out a notebook for their notes after the women have said their opinion, as the play progresses it becomes apparent that the only conclusions the males consider are their own.
It was right for the women to hide the evidence also because this served to strengthen the belief among women that they did not only function to serve men and the household. Women in this period did not have a voice. The men thought the sole responsibility of women was to make the men’s life easier. As the play progresses, the two female protagonists are shown to discover trivial things that lead to their conclusion of who killed the murder victim.
