Extract of sample "English"

A dyadic person functions based on honor and shame, which are both related to what other people are thinking.  During the first century, being common and conforming to the norm is an important and proper character. One possible reason why the first-century people detest uniqueness is based on the example that every person is a representative of his or her particular group, either family or community, thus needed to be giving the right impression at all times due to the lack of ways of international communication that can introduce people to other parts of the world.  This is contrary to the 21st-century attitude which promotes individuality and uniqueness.  In the modern world, each person’s character is important, one example is that manufacturers of different products want to get to know individuals to produce what they want.

Reading B

There are significant differences between the first-century people represented by the dyadic Mediterranean’s and the 21st-century people represented by the Americans.  The primary character is the high value of conformity or being common in the first-century person and the high value of individuality and independence in the 21st-century person. Authoritarian attitude is also the main leadership trait in the first-century person world while democracy is more popular for 21st-century person perceive attitude as a rule and segregation factor thus he or she would not dare mingle with people of different status.  On the other hand, a th21st-century person does not believe that status should define a person; people are still people no matter the status.

Reading C

In the first century, honor is defined based on 3 factors that are considered to define the whole social construct during that time namely power, gender status, and religion.  Honor is a claim or access to a level of worth in society.  Like wealth, it can be achieved either through genealogy and ancestors or through an honorable act that earned the praise of the people.  Because gender is an important value in honor, there is a double standard when it comes to the definition of honor between the man and women.  For men, the characteristics referring to manliness, strength, and leadership in the family are the main definition of honor.  For women, it is their capability for reproduction while at the same time maintaining discretion, shyness, and sexual exclusiveness.  The honor of men can be defined by their role in the family as well as in the community but women can only be defined by their role inside the house and within the family.

Reading D

The pre-industrial city is the setting for the 1st-century people with the main basis of livelihood are agriculture and fisheries.  Such societies are based on labor and in history; authoritarian leadership goes well with such communities because they follow this particular political and social structure.  It can also be related to the attitude of the people being submissive to leaders.  In the industrial and post-industrial city structure, wherein numerous roles and skills are necessary for the whole political and social structure to function, there is a more cooperative and democratic interaction.  Each part has a significant role, individualistic.

Lesson

Based on the readings and the lesson, I have learned that even today 1st centur1st-century still exists.  Although I do not want to generalize or judge, 1st-century attitudes can be equated to being closed and refusing to accept changes in society.  In addition, the 21s21st-century attitude exists a reason, it is because this set of moral and social behavior is needed to be able to adapt to the present era, an era of growth and openness to freedom, uniqueness, and rights of each individual.
