Misery by Rob Reiner - Movie Review Example

The film, Misery 1990, directed by Rob Reiner was a movie based on a 1987 novel. The novel by Stephen King had the same heading as the movie, Misery. Both the novel and the movie have their settings in Colorado, Sidewinder town. The movie that runs for about 108 minutes has its genre classified as a horror/ thriller/drama. It is mainly a horror thriller. Drama, however, comes into the movie during scenes that display romance between the two main characters. There are also, in the movie, instances of comedy. The film is about a conflict that emanates between a writer and one of his fans. The fan demands a change in the content of the writer’s latest production. This is after she realized that it is most likely the end of the Misery series of books since the main character dies. Annie, the fan demands a change of content from the ailing writer. She demands that the writer brings to life the main character after finding out that the writer killed him in his latest novel. The ailing writer was nursing wounds after breaking his legs and other injuries in the body from an accident when the car failed to go because of the snow.

The characters in the movie are admirable and deep. A deep analysis of the movie reveals that the characters have a range of characters to explore, as well. Sheldon is a character in the movie displayed as the writer who undergoes tribulations in the arms of one of his fans. As a writer, he had the thought to try out something different from what he does and thought of the possibility of gaining fame from it still. Although he is helpless from the pain he bears from the accident, he proves to be a strong character and is proactive throughout the movie. Sheldon has an admirable and respectable character.  Besides his endurance for Annie’s obsession and tortures, he manages to gain her trust towards the end of the movie. He is likable for his ability to fight and come out of the horrible situation that he undergoes in the movie.

Annie Wilkes, in the movie, is a fan who enjoys Sheldon’s series of books.  She represents the antagonist in the movie. Throughout the movie, King depicts an unpredictable character of Annie. Encounters with her in the movie bring out serious suspense in the viewers. In some scenes, she tenderly cares for her patient, the writer, with the utmost diligence and serves him with trustworthy hospitality. The smile on her face in some scenes, in the movie, reveals a jovial and light character in her. She, however, depicts a contrasting characteristic from the one depicted in her previous jovial and happy facial expressions. She turns fierce and abusive an almost a plainly insane character. The search for the true character of Annie makes the viewer of keep watching for the movie’s touchy feel. The revelation from the search by Paul conducted in Annie’s house that she was a nurse and an ex-murder evokes surprise in the viewers. The incident saw her murder the children she attended to at her workplace but never proceeded to conviction because there was no evidence. She, however, lost her professional license and never went back to practice nursing. The movie’s most celebrated scene, the hobbling scene, reveals the two-sided character of Annie. She reveals that she certainly can murder the person she loves most. She best displays the horror in the movie from this scene (Muir 112).
