Industrial production activities have affected the environment in the last few decades (Krzyzanowski 2005). Since the industrial revolution, there has been an exploitation of natural resources to a great extent. Some activities in our industrialized world like widespread burning of fossil fuels, discharge of various chemical pollutants into the air, water and soil, deforestation because of agriculture and extensive exploitation of all natural resources are now threatening to demolish the environment in which human existence depends.

Environmental management awareness has grown across all industries and organizations are laying emphasis on this issue (Whitelaw, 1997). The automobile is no exception to this rule. Many activities of the automobile industry like the use of raw material are especially harmful to the environment.Globalization in India has had four major impacts. They are an economic impact, political impact, cultural impact, and technological impact. All of these have caused environmental changes in the Indian economy (Narayanan & Vashisht 2008).

Increased international exposure of India increases the resource usage and pollution levels. Political integration pressurizes the government to follow global environmental plans. Additionally, the increase in information and technology has an undesirable impact on resource usage and pollution levels. Some other reasons of environmental problems are inadequate pricing policies for the resources of the environment and organizations not incorporating the pollution cost in their pricing (Krawack 1993).

Authors such as Ken Whitelaw (1997) and Andrew Gouldson (1993) have tried to define the term environment management and a few other notable authors are mentioned here also.
