Environmental Research and Sustainability by Student’s name Code+ course name Professor’s name University name City, State Date : Personal reflection It is quite surprisingly to see the prevailing condition of environmental pollution in Australia. With Australia being one of the most vulnerable countries to climatic changes still individual, continue to engage in the environmental polluting activities. Environmental research and sustainability group has ideally focused its effort in promoting environmental protection through research and enlightening individuals and the society at large the importance of environmental protection. The following areas took the panel for the discussion; General overview of the environmental challenges in Australia. Invention of new method of energy provision and the proposed source was wind. Campaign on environmental protection awareness to the public. The application of drip method of irrigation in farming to reduce water wastage. Scientific principles underlying various strategies we intend to take in our projects Imposition of penalties to those caught engaging in various environmental polluting activities. Generally, all the above strategies were geared to seeing a reduction if not an end to environmental pollution that has extremely become a concern not only in Australia but also has extended its jaws internationally. However, just to mention an overview of the whole discussion, members analyzed the above topics and various issues arouse. The issue of analyzing environmental challenges was well accepted by all members. Use of drip irrigation and environmental protection campaign were also positively received by all members. On the other hand various ideas were brought to challenge the other strategies raised. For example, the issue of inventing new method of energy generation was in a way neglected by some of the members. This was because of the well income generating and readily available coal as source of energy. Some viewed the idea as a way that could reduce the income-generating source of energy (coal). After a long exchange of ideologies, the members agreed that the benefits accruing from the project were of more advantages than the current coal sources. Then the issue of imposing penalties was totally neglected in sense that punishing the society members could hinder their cooperation in the whole group idea. Personally, to review on the whole group idea and strategies, the group was quite innovative and could really see a tremendous reduction in environmental pollution. The use of wind as source of power to replace the current source, which is coal, could reduce the emission of hazardous gases like carbon (IV) oxide to the environment. Most of environmental polluting activities carried out by society are due to lack of knowledge on the same. The proposed campaign by the group could really see an enlightened society thus reduction of these polluting activities. Australia being one driest country in the continent implies shortage of rain and water. The dominating methods of irrigation like use of sprinkler from the few rivers have really seen the increased water shortage. The idea of encouraging use of drip irrigation could really see an end to this problem. In addition, mention on the issue of penalties, it is clear that human being should not at any time be forced submit to set laws instead one should respect the law `from their own conscious. To commence with, there was need to first analyze the most wanting environmental challenges that are facing the contemporary Australian society. There was need to identify various challenges to help in formulating the relevant strategies. Our discussion saw us land in the following environmental challenges: water, climatic changes and energy. Climatic change turned to be the environmental challenge in Australia over the last few decades. Persistent drought and water shortages since the start of twenty-first century are example of natural events that are attributed to poor climatic changes. Australia takes a position in the top ten countries globally that has increased greenhouse gas emissions that have in one way or the contributed to these climatic changes. Just a few years back, there was publication of Garnaut report proposed to help in reduction of carbon pollution. In regards to energy use, Australia is one of the major exporter and consumer of coal. Combustion of coal leads to emission of a lot of carbon (IV) oxide to the atmosphere. This has progressively turned up Australia to be one of the most vulnerable to poor climatic conditions countries. These challenges are not only Australian nation concern but also a great concern even to international communities. For example, the frequent experience of corrosive acid rains in many countries of our continent is a concern by many international communities. Deforestation is another point of concern that is continuously doing away with rain catchment areas. All this is just in search of charcoal as source of energy. The campaign on usage of natural sources of energy such as wind will reduce this global effect. (Porter, G. and Welsh Brown, J. 1991) The group focused on inverting more large-scale wind energy producing plants. The project had initially existed but in small scale but the group could see a spread of this to large scales. To emphasize on this the group proposed the start of various projects to tap wind and use it to generate power in our stations. The problem of water shortages was also a problem that the group had to put into account during their research. The focus was not only how to conserve the little water available but also to get a way of attracting more rains. This propelled our effort to starting no deforestation campaign. The issue of preserving the remaining forest was mainly focused at. (Schutz, H. 1997). To see a success to all the strategies above the group had to develop some ethical issue in which it could attribute to its success. The acknowledgement of partnership was an issue to note during the operation of group activities. The whole process was also to be governed by rejection to individualism. Human individualism makes human being to develop selfishness even to the nature, which in return causes reckless exploitation of natural resources just to gain individual benefits. In regards to this, the group resulted to seeking for partnership with environmental professional, governmental departments and the community at large. In regards to our area of specialization, the government has set out rules to govern the electric generation through Renewable Energy Act. Complying with the rules and regulations of the state is an obligation to each citizen. As a group, we are hand in hand with this act by ensuring that we enhance more research in the field of renewable sources of energy and help in enlightening the society on the essence of using the renewable sources. In conclusion, the group faced some challenges especially in the formulation of scientific principles underlying our areas of research. This is attempting to explain the application of formulated scientific rules in generation of power. Explanation of the whole idea was of importance in identifying our competency in the field of research. Our research led us to knowing more the theory behind electromagnetic induction in a moving coil. This is induction electromagnetic field to the secondary coil due rotation of the primary coil. This was the main source of our whole project. Then on the other hand, the idea of public campaign to enlighten was highly appreciated thus simply accepted. Then application of drip irrigation was simply concluded since it did not require many procedures to start drip irrigation project. Our belief is that the whole idea shall not remain a dream but shall see its accomplishment. (Pillai 2010) References Porter, G. and Welsh Brown, J. 1991. Global Environmental Politics. Boulder: Westview Press. Schutz, H. 1997. The Material Basis of Industrial Economics. Washington, D.C: World Resources Institute. Pillai. 2010 .Electromagnetic induction .India: Chennai publishers. Presentation The increased environmental pollution has seen a tremendous increase of diseases in our country due to release of hazardous gases. Disease like cancer is tremendously turning to be a concern to the whole world. A reduction in environmental pollution will help in controlling these fatal diseases. An economy based on environmental protection can therefore be achieved by formulating rules to govern environmental pollution. Our group is devoted to collaborate with the government especially in implementing the new rules formulated particularly under the Renewable Energy Act. Our project of designing wind source of power has scientific underlying principles. The whole idea of the project emanates from the knowledge of electromagnetic induction. It starts by designing of turbines, which are wind driven. The rotation of the turbines induces charges to the primary coil of the generator, which in return induces current to the secondary coil that generates energy. The drip irrigation project uses the scientific knowledge of leaching. This will really help in conserving water. In communicating the whole idea to the public and government the group will set up sample turbines to display to the public and governmental departments so has to make them get the whole idea and marry it to see a way forward in our strategies.
