On Ambition and Friendship Back in the latter part of high school, I became part of the five students chosen from our class to participate in an inter-school leadership training and mentoring program following our spiritual retreat. Since the opportunity was designed for us to make a better assessment of our potentials in leadership and other aspects, I particularly took the chance at focusing on my interest in teaching. Eventually, there were seven of us including three of my friends in class who acquired the task and were deployed as a team into an institution within a poor community down south.

The initial stages of work had been challenging yet fulfilling until one of my friends started taking unusual control of the group by seemingly imposing uneven delegation of assignments claiming that the majority of the pupils requested more of his service than those of others in our roster. I had thought all along that my own performance was capable of radiating motivation in such a way as to get everyone in the team operate with a sense of interdependence. Then I figured that some people desired the same amount of recognition I was receiving so that the spirit of teamwork would be best acknowledged.

Another cause that might have led to indifference and the urge to manipulate was my failure to interact properly, being accustomed to individualistic approach toward personal growth at the expense of quality relations. Apparently, I occurred to have overlooked the equivalent significance of the contributions made by the rest of the members. By such failure to promote the welfare of others especially their worth in the collective effort, my friends and certain other members had narrowed to thinking that I was conceited.

Furthermore, individual expectations greatly account as well for the ground why unpleasant reactions arose and we were not adequately informed of the coherent objectives with respect to cooperation among the members in the process besides the concrete goal of gaining enhancement for our leading attributes. In effect, factions naturally emerged in our group and a friend of three years, as aforementioned, expressed straightforward disagreement on the current setup. Though seeing that I had successfully proven remarkable skills at carrying out lectures on the subject I knew with mastery, the inability and unconscious reluctance of communicating good intentions with mentoring however rendered the other person to suppose that I was merely trying to get an edge over the rest rather than acting on my improved version of using knowledge and skills to meet the needs and satisfaction of the learners.

As a consequence also, the value of reliability with each other declined to a larger extent that more immature actions in response followed and which even extended to affect the level of sincerity in abiding by the aims of the program. To this extent, I had realized how impacting a professional endeavor and decision is to friendship or personal attachments. While I maintained keeping up with the aspirations of the training program knowing the benefits entailed to influence the direction of my career with success in the future, I failed at placing the right balance on relationships.

In the process, I and my friends had discovered individual weaknesses that were not revealed to us prior in a chiefly smooth going companionship. At first, it was so difficult that we each had a tough time coping with one another in terms of the emerging human nature that appeared to win the favor of only the half-hearted majority in the team. Losing trust and respect were truly unbearable outcomes since these made hard-to-break walls of pride between us that further magnified the problem for which we could barely express a solemn motive for taking steps toward resolution.

At the time I initiated on breaking down layers of miscommunication by setting all my concerns aside with complete humility nevertheless, the foundation as a team earned back its original strength and trust that essentially reunited our individual exertions to a common vision. Whatever one chooses to accomplish, the essence of balance must be present in all aspects of undertaking and not be taken for granted at the expense of valuable affairs or priceless relations as a friendship founded through the test of time and circumstances.
