Types of Terrorism Question Terrorism, obviously, is a grave issue that affects the modern world in various sectors and a serious threat to peaceful life of mankind. The actions of governments in preventing the threat of terrorism is appreciable, however, it is quite alarming to note that the numbers of terrorist attacks are increasing as identified in the study of Homeland Security Advisory Council (2007). The Council’s study report, entitled; The Future of Terrorism Task Force recommends various actions to be implemented to regulate terrorism and its insurgencies.

Among the recommendations, every one of them is appreciable; however, I personally prefer the following: The recommendation to the Secretary to establish an Office of Net Assessment (ONA) within the Department is praiseworthy as it may provide the Secretary to evaluate the forthcoming threats and the potentials of U.S. to face the threats. As the increasing attacks provide little time for the homeland security community to schedule their feats, ONA can serve a great deal by properly directing them.

It is unlikely that any sensible person will take a different view that policies, programs and procedures should be focused on future and not only on current threats and responses. Therefore, I agree with the recommendation of ONA’s long-term assessments and strategies aimed to protect U.S. from the future threats. Another acceptable recommendation for me is, “The Department must place a renewed emphasis on recruiting professionals of all types with diverse perspectives, worldviews, skills, languages, and cultural backgrounds and expertise” (Future of Terrorism Task Force, 2007, p.8). It has often been identified that the vast cultural differences between the Muslim communities and the West pave the way for certain issues.

Especially the predicative approach; as in matters concerning religion or other issues, of the one to the other often makes things complicate. As such, it would be better for the Department to recruit individuals belongs to different cultural backgrounds, language and unique perspectives. Giving training to the department employees is also highly appreciated. Along with the previous recommendation, the suggestion to, “Broader avenues of dialogue with the Muslim community should be identified and pursued by the Department to foster mutual respect and understanding, and ultimately trust” (Future of Terrorism Task Force, 2007, p.9) should also be added.

I think, establishing a healthy relation with the Muslim community will certainly help U.S. to considerably alleviate the threat of terrorism. Above all, it will certainly be difficult for a government alone to manage terrorism related issues that it needs a substantial amount of public support. For seeking public support, government has to depend on media and educational institutions. In order to protest against terrorism, government should obviously seek media support. Thus, the recommendation to seek media support also deserves significance.

Keeping the confidentiality of the matters related with security has a decisive role in the terrorism prevention programs. Therefore, the Department should be very to keep the secrecy of the lexicon used in public statements. The public experts should use the lexicon as clear, concise and should be careful to avert it from reaching the hands of the extremists. Analyzing this recommendation I agree with its implementation in government sectors as n attempt to encounter terrorists. The very notable thing with regard to this recommendation is that it insists media and government to keep away from creating sensational news about Muslims.

Question-2 It has often been noted that several western countries are conducting various Muslim outreach programs intended to establish a good relation with the Muslims. Many American government institutions and government institutions of other nations also are identified as encouraging such outreach programs, dialogue and inclusion efforts. Afghan American Muslim Outreach (AAMO), headquartered in Orange County is such an institution that promotes outreach programs. The main purpose of AAMO is to serve the Afghan communities through activism and advocacy initiatives and fostering an Afghan American Muslim identity and good will and mutual respect amongst all (Afghan American Muslim Outreach, 2011).

AAMO aims development in various sectors such as Afghan culture, history by preserving Afghan values and opening the vista to the rich Afghan languages for the younger generations. The programs also facilitate Islamic education in Afghan focusing on the values of Islam religion. The outreach programs of AAMO are aiming to promote unity, harmony, and brotherhood among the Afghan Americans. To foster, promote, explore and encourage increased communication interaction, and exchange of ideas among Afghan people of various social, economic, religious, cultural, and ethnic background (Afghan American Muslim Outreach, 2011).

The goals of AAMO also include programs to provide guidance, help and counseling to the youth in their spiritual, educational and professional growth (Afghan American Muslim Outreach, 2011). The evaluation of AAMO’s programs makes clear that the institution focus on the overall development of Afghan people. Reference List: Afghan American Muslim Outreach (2011).
