Running head – Status of Women Women as Independent, Respected, Respectful and Equal Human- beings to men Abhisek.M.Jain ABSTRACT Women as independent, respected, respectful and equal human beings to men. The qualities of women and the reasons for why should they be considered on par with men. A famous poet Otway once said- “O women, lovely women! Nature made thee to temper man We had been brutes with you Angels are painted fair to look like you There is in you all that we believe of heaven Amazing brightness, purity and truth Eternal joy and everlasting love.” This quotation seems to point out how man have been over the years discriminating women of their rights. Women are denied of their basic rights like equality, justice, independence etc. Women are the personification of self sacrifice. They have the right to be treated as equal human being to man. In the past men considered women as impure and incomplete human being who have been allotted with the habits of lying, sitting around, and qualities such as anger, meanness, treachery and bad conducts. But slowly the condition of women changed. Women started to fight for their rights. The ideas of “liberty, equality and fraternity” inspired several women to fight for their rights. And now women are slowly gaining the right which will help them to stand on par with men in every aspect of life. Women are the embodiment of sacrifice, silent suffering, humility, faith and knowledge. Women have every right to occupy a position in the society which is equivalent to men. If all human-beings are equal how can we say women are inferior to men. To call women a weaker sex is a libel, its men injustice to women. If by strength it is meant brute power than women are weaker than men. If by strength it is meant moral power then women is immeasurably superior to men. Woman is the companion of men, gifted with equal mental capacities. She has the right to participate in all the debates, deliberations and activities and offer her suggestions along with man for bringing about a better social order. And she has an equal right of freedom and liberty with them. If the women are denied their rights the blame goes to men. Men have regarded women as his tool. She has learned to be his tool and in the end found easy and pleasurable to be such, because when one drags another in his fall the descent is easy. If only the women of the world would come together they could display such heroic non-violence as to kick away the atom bomb like a mere ball. Women have been so gifted by God. If an ancestral treasure lying buried in the corner of the house unknown to the members of the family suddenly discovered, what a celebration it would occasion. Similarly women’s marvellous power is lying dormant. The wife is not the husband’s slave but his companion and his help-mate and an equal partner in all his joys and sorrows as free as the husband to choose her own path. We often hear behind a successful man there is a woman. This is hundred percent true. Without the encouragement of women, men cannot achieve anything. Today we find women in all walks of life. They have achieved glory in all the fields in which men have won laurels. They often referred to as weaker sex; they have shown the world that they are not second to men in anyway. Modern world needs the efforts of the women to check drug abuse, to uplift the down trodden, to attend on the sick and needy. Only they have they have the understanding and patience to achieve this. They can join together and fight against discrimination, observance of sati, dowry and alcoholism. Without women there can be no man. If non-violence is the law of the being the future is with women. Who can make a more effective appeal to heart rather than women? In the present world the scenario has changed. Women are given full right, equality and freedom to do anything according to their wish. Now-a-days women are seen in every field of business, women are not only walking on par with them but they are a step ahead of them. Women are competing with men in each and every field. Women have used to the fullest extent the right given to them. If we take the media image of women it has also completely changed over the years. Women are increasingly visible in positions of power and responsibility. Yet, time and again we are told through the worn out clichés of film scripts that a woman may be a district collector, a police officer, a scientist, but she cannot afford to forget that she is essentially and fundamentally a mother. Advertisements are as retrograde as films in this respect. Images of working women are used to reinforce what is seen as their primary vocation. They must look beautiful, earn an income and yet be nurturing and home loving. According to the women an ideal women is the one who works at home, at her profession and yet finds time to keep a good house, attend to her husband and children’s needs, all of which she manages without appearing ruffled or tired. According to Mary Wollstonecraft, “if women are considered inferior it is not because they nature made them that way. If women appeared stupid and passive it is not because some innate lack of intelligence but because women have never been allowed by men to cultivate their minds.” God created man and woman as equal so men have no rights to deny woman of their rights. If women of India cultivate in themselves the courage to face difficulties bravely and non-violently, they can laugh to scorn and realise the ideal of unadulterated independence in terms of the masses which would serve as an example to the world. And this can be done only by the women because they are the personification of the power of self-suffering. If non-violence is the law of the being the future is with women. CONCLUSION Women are as intelligent and as efficient as men. If they are provided a path or if their qualities are tapped and utilised in productive fields it will produce breath-taking results. Women have proved their abilities and capacities in umpteen numbers of cases. Women have every right to be given a status which is equivalent to men. If men and women join hands together and work with each other they can produce brilliant results which will e helpful for the development of the entire world. Read More
