Why do I want to work in public health and how will the program of study help me achieve them? Life unfolds a whole new direction for people all overthe world. This is representative of existence within this world that things are happening and changing in one direction or the other – for both good and bad. It is the prerogative of humans to understand how to best comprehend the true meaning of life after the troubles that they go through and all the potential areas of worry make their rounds. They seem to find shelter with less happiness coming to their rescue, but guaranteeing them that it will surely come once again to make room for hope and a better tomorrow. Such is the changing face of life that a human being would long to live the merry moments with her loved ones and avoid the treacherous paths so that her end is close to her chosen destiny. I believe my journey in the midst of life has not been any different and I have always left my hard work and struggle on to the good things that life offers me at the end of the day, which on a personal level is not only solacing but also refreshing each time it happens. Being a female and a mother of a kid is something that the society does not quite look down with contentment and a sense of fulfillment. More so when I am the single parent and no one to look after my young one, the society gazes its eye on the wrong reasons more than the positive shades. However I am much contented with my life and look forward to having all the thrills and pleasures that life could bestow me with. I have always dedicated myself whole heartedly towards the well being of my family – a fact that is representative of my proper upbringing and solid personality basis. I have had interests in gaining further education after I quit the same and got married. Now, after a gap of few years, I have set my goals on something that will change my life as well as my kid’s and open doors of opportunities since I believe that higher education works to the benefit of almost everyone and I am no exception to this rule. My upbringing was done in Kenya where I was born but soon after I migrated to Germany and then later on moved to Colorado Springs. It was at this time that I attained the Applied Sciences’ Associates Degree and thus started my job as a Medical Assistant. This opened up my thinking towards helping the humanity and serving it in any manner that I could possibly contribute in. I had a good time with the medical staff and learned a lot of new things which were a blessing for me all this while. As supporting my family with the meager amount was insufficient, I took the decision to take the move towards attaining the Associate Degree in Health Information Management. This degree program asked of me to understand the administrative regimes and thus I understood the basics of medical records from there. With my constant urge of completing the Bachelor’s degree, I am currently finishing up the same degree from the University of Cincinnati, entailed in a distance learning program which has helped me immensely at coming to terms with my family and dedicating time as a full time employee at the Kaiser Permanente in Georgia. Changing times have helped me come to terms with my changing hobbies and pastimes. I have learned and enjoyed swimming, jogging, cooking foods of ethnic nature, shopping and reading novels. I have always loved to be with my kid which is my source of happiness and satisfaction. However I understand that the current hard phase of life would not exist for long and I would be set free sooner rather than later. My belief on life is always there and the calamities which have struck the world seem to annoy me the most. This raises awareness within me that I have to do my bit my attaining the relevant education and thus serving the humanity in one way or the other. The people around me are mostly helpful, cordial and supportive. They have always encouraged me through thick and thin therefore my belief in commoners is stronger with each passing day. This support is one of the main reasons as to why I am satisfied and happy even though I had a tough time dealing with the post-divorce issues and the house fire which left me and my kid displaced. Had the close ones not facilitated me in such troubled times, I would sure have lost my basis and I owe my gratitude to them for all the goodness that there is in my life. This is the reason that I have always respected the society and seen the glass as half full than the other way round. Optimism is something that seems to come naturally to me. The reason as to why I am interested in Epidemiology is the fact that I hail from East Africa and also because my family died from the epidemic of AIDS which is not considered as a good sign by the people. They seem to keep such people away from their close circles and thus I have known and experienced the wrath that AIDS brings with it. Thus I understand what it is like when one tries to relate the problems which come with the different illnesses of life and hence the reason I have decided to dedicate my life towards the well being of the people. I believe that the field of Epidemiology is the most suited for me and I could contribute in the best form possible if I am given a chance to show my prowess in the said field. I want to attain a Master’s degree and then later on pursue the PhD program which would gear me up well with the changing trends and routines in Epidemiology. I want to give the community its due – being possible merely on the premise that I attain the relevant education and thus return to the society what I dearly wish to. For this I would endeavor to work on a global level, travel to distances and explore new destinations and meet new people. I understand that at the end of the day sharing and caring wins more hearts than everything combined. I would request the authorities at the helm of affairs to grant me admission at the Rollins School of Public Health so that I could live my dream and achieve my aspirations to the fullest. I would be grateful if I am provided a chance to pursue my higher education in my chosen area of health sciences. Word Count: 1,141 Read More
