This was undertaken in the form of a qualitative investigation. The literature review introduced the history of the legislation surrounding medical research, as well as the current legal and ethical frameworks that are in place for medical research. The qualitative research was undertaken in the form of a critical assessment of the US legal and ethical frameworks, with a view to finding out how different and/or advanced they are when compared to those in the UK. By finding this out the author was able to determine whether the UK was actively involved in advancing medical research. After a lengthy literature review and some secondary research, it was found that the advancement of medical research in the UK was indeed being affected, but not by the ethical and legal frameworks of medical research, but by the government structure and the non-prioritisation of medical research.
