It is my long-cherished dream to work as a Physician Assistant in the area of family practice and be of service to the society especially to the Latino community where there is a lack of adequate healthcare facilities. The role of a medical physician assistant is gaining a lot of importance as physicians are increasingly unable to spend quality time with their patients due to time constraints. Physicians are required to constantly update themselves with the latest developments in their area of specialization.

Hence it has become the purview of the physician assistants and nurses to carry out an initial analysis of the patient and then forward them to the doctor. Thus it is the nurses and medical assistants who spend the maximum time with the patients and actually hear out their problems. As a medical assistant there are no time constraints like that of the physician and hence in my years as a physician assistant I spent quality time with my patients and obtained a detailed medical history in addition to performing all the pre-diagnostic tests which will enable the doctor to have a better insight on the patient’s medical condition and thereby afford effective treatment.

In the present scenario, medical assistants serve as a bridge between the every busy physician and the patients. In short, they have become an extension of the medical doctors which inspired me to take up a career as a physician assistant. I have always had an inner feeling that I am destined to serve the people and contribute whatever possible from my end to the under-privileged people of the society. Raised in the inner city of New York I am aware of this gap and hence would like to use my education and experience to provide quality healthcare to these disadvantaged people.

I would also like to add that I am the first in my family to pursue a graduate education. However, despite my low scores in science GPA and GRE, I have learnt a lot while working as a medical assistant. With regard to my healthcare experience, I have worked as an ophthalmic medical assistant for about 15 years during which time I have understood the importance of effective communication between patient and physician. In addition it is also important to develop and maintain a trustworthy and sincere relationship with the Physician that would be needed in order to constantly update in our area of practice.

I am also blessed with a good patience level which is vital to establish a rapport with the patient by hearing to their pains and problems. Hearing out their problems patiently is itself a good start for effective treatment as it will help to establish a trustworthy relationship between the patient and the physician or medical assistant. As a physician assistant I would like to help the disadvantaged people of the society and provide quality, cost-effective and accessible healthcare to those patients.

In addition to family practice, physician assistants can also provide service in areas of emergency medicine, surgical and rural medicine and I am willing to learn based on the demands of my work. Working at the grass-root level will also provide me an opportunity to show my leadership and organizational skills and to assess the needs of the community. I believe that a successful medical assistant should show a high level of commitment to his profession by which they can bring about a change in community clinics that provide medical facilities to the under-privileged people of the society.

It has been widely accepted that no one community can be healthy when a large percentage of its population do not have access to basic healthcare. Thus I am now seeking an opportunity to enroll in the medical assistantship program and pursue my education further to realize my goal. I believe that this program will help me improve my clinical knowledge and practical skills to diagnose and treat medical conditions and serve the disadvantaged people of the community. With this experience, I believe that I would be able to handle more responsibilities that will help me grow in my career.

If given an opportunity to enroll in your program, I assure my fullest commitment and dedication as a student and assure that I would be a successful physician assistant in the future.
