My Reaction to The General History of the Pyrates by Daniel Defoe I particularly like watching pirate movies and I often wonder where did the image of missing eyes and legs among pirates came from and why they are so engrossed about some buried treasures. The book The General History of the Pyrates by Daniel Defoe made me realize where the idea came from. I was a bit confused about the author/s of the book because at one time, I came across a similar book that had the name of Nathaniel as its author.

Despite this confusion however, the book is an entertaining read (albeit not comparable to watching pirate movie such as Pirates of the Caribbean) because all the folklore about piracy came from this book and was even touted to be based from actual facts and experience especially Volume one because it portrayed the colorful character of the pirates in the 1700s. Our idea today about pirates actually came from that book. While there is another Volume (Two), it is like a prequel to the Volume one and predates it.

But I like the second volume more. The book tells the account of piracy that involves, robbery and murder through the character of Captain Charles Johnson, which many experts agreed is the pen name of Daniel Defoe in the book. This is an exciting read because it justifies the exploits and adventure of pirates which many of us, including I, played and even believed during our childhood. After the read, it feels good to realize that the characters of pirates were not after all a figment of imagination but were in fact based on facts.
