Extract of sample "History and Political Science: the Government System in the United States"

The Government System in the United States is structured along with divisions that were established with the Founding Forefathers. Checks and balances occur in the government through the division of three primary branches: executive, judicial, and legislative. There are major arguments for and against these divisions. Perhaps the greatest advantage to a system of checks and balances is that it ensures that no one branch of government gains too much power. For instance, if the executive branch had the complete power of the United States vested in its care then a significant amount of individuals could potentially feel alienated or oppressed by the decision-making (Joe). Similarly, the short time period of congressional representatives and the life period of judicial representatives allows for differing perspectives to be thrown into the political mix. Still, theorists recognize that there are many disadvantages. These added layers hinder the quick passage of laws that could directly contribute to the betterment of society (Rice).
