? (Unit 15th August of the Career that I would like to have I would like to have a career as a head of the marketing department in a large company. This job involves coming up with new ideas that would help the organization to explore new markets and put strategies that would help to improve the market numbers of the organization’s products. Apart from coordinating the sales promotion activities of the organization; the head of marketing department job requires passion and understanding of the organization’s business activities. Even though there are various similarities in the operations of this job, various organizations have differentiated this job description by incorporating some additional responsibilities in this department. The differences in the job description of the organizations may be due to the type of business, the number of employees in the organization, the company’s policies etc. For example, in Safeway Inc, which is a chain of supermarket business; the head of marketing department ensures that the various products of the supermarket are well marketed. This involves incorporation of various marketing strategies that is well suited for this organization such as good publicity. On the other hand, in an organization like Exxon Company; the head of marketing department has a wider responsibility of ensuring good sales for the various products. In Exxon, the staff at the marketing department must be well versed with the type of markets available for its products. Therefore, a career as the head of the marketing department is not only involving but gives one a challenge to create new ideas that would be beneficial for the organization. 2. Career preview in two organizations Company 1 – Safeway Inc Brand of the organization Safeway Inc. is a corporation that is involved in the retail business. Having set up a chain of supermarkets in North America, Safeway Inc deals retails groceries, bakery, liquor, foodstuffs, household commodities, fuels, pharmaceuticals etc ((Safeway Inc website). Employment benefits Employment as the head of marketing department is beneficial due to its exposure in the corporate world, various allowances, good salary and remunerations etc. In addition, Safeway Inc. provides a serene environment for the provision of experience and gaining of expertise in the marketing department. Training and promotion opportunities Safeway Inc. carries out various training programs to keep its employees well versed in its retail business. The training is usually done through seminars, workshops field trips etc. In addition, the company fosters team building by organizing joint activities that bring together workers from different departments. In terms of promotions, Safeway Inc. has a professional code that governs the job promotions of different employees. These promotions are done considering various factors such as the level of education, work experience, the performance of the employees etc. Compensation Compensation acts as a motivating factor for employees at Safeway Inc. because it promotes loyalty and improves their dedication to work. Work compensation are in the form of payment of overtime and giving allowances to employees such as house allowance, travelling allowance and medical insurance. Statement of corporate social responsibility “At Safeway Inc. corporate social responsibility is the core of what we do; we are committed to improving lives and communities” (Safeway Inc website) Job location The job in Safeway Inc can either be located in one of the supermarket chains or in its headquarters in California. However, employees are subject to job transfers as per the company rules and regulations. Company 2 – Exxon Mobil Company Brand of the organization Exxon Mobil Company is a multinational US based company that deals with oil and gas products. It also deals with lubricants, petrochemicals and owns various oil refineries in the world (Exxon Mobil website). Employment benefits A job at Exxon Mobil is an important venture for any employee wishing to join the corporate world. This is as a result of its exposure in the overseas business planning and investment projects of this company. Also, employees stand to benefit from the rewarding salaries and allowances offered by this company. Training and promotion opportunities Exxon Mobil trains its new employees so that they can be well versed with its activities both in the US and in the overseas countries. In addition, the company carries out seasonal training on its employees from time to time. The employees are mostly trained on the new markets and marketing strategies that would help to improve the sales of the company. Moreover, the promotion opportunities by Exxon Company are based on merit, work dedication and educational capabilities of the employees. This allows for a fare and competitive rise in ranks of the employees in the company. Compensation In order to boost employee loyalty, Exxon Mobil has set up a good compensation policy that seeks to reward employees for their good work. Apart from issuing out good salaries, the company ensures that employees are rewarded for their overtime work and also they are given various allowances such as travelling allowances, house allowances and medical insurance. Corporate social responsibility “Exxon Mobil is committed to being the world’s premier petroleum and petrochemical company while maintaining good health and safety of the society and also the environment” (Exxon Mobil website). Job location Being a multinational company, employees at Exxon Company are required to be flexible in their operations. They can therefore work at any location in the branches of the company. Interview with the organizations’ employees Interview 1- Safeway Inc I carried out an interview with one of liquor merchandise in the Northern California Safeway who held the position as the head of the that department. According to the interviewee, the working conditions at Safeway required dedication and experience in the retail business. Also, the interview revealed that the liquor merchandise performed general works including marketing and distribution of various liquor products. In addition, the interview was beneficial in understanding the first hand information about the operation strategies, decision making process, the chain of command and the future prospects of Safeway Inc. Interview 2- Exxon Mobil Company I carried out an interview with a geologist at Exxon Mobil Company. In the interview, the geologist explained the oil exploration processes of the company, the type of equipment used by the company, the mechanisms put in place to ensure proper oil collection, and also the refining processes done by the company. In addition, the working conditions and policies of worker’s welfare such as health insurance, transport allowance, house allowance and other allowances was explained by the geologist. Though geologists mostly work in the oil field, his work was coordination of all geological activities in the exploration processes in Northern Africa. Also, the interviewee explained the challenges and the benefits of working for Exxon Mobil Company. 3. Compare and contrast the two companies Similarities between Safeway Inc. and Exxon Mobil Company Employee training Both companies are concerned about the productivity of their employees hence they are compelled to carry out training programs for them. These training programs are carried out through seminars, workshops and team building exercises. As a result of employee training, both Exxon Mobil Company and Safeway Inc. are able to improve their profit levels because of customer satisfaction. Branches The two companies are both widespread in the United States with various branches offering similar products to the public. The widespread nature of the businesses provides the corporate team with various data that are instrumental in the decision making process. Also, the presence of sub-branches exposes employees to different business locations hence help to build their level of expertise. Expansion strategies Both companies have ambitious expansion strategies that would help to improve its capital base hence improving the revenue output. For example, Safeway Inc. plans on expanding more into Canada and the southern States in the US while Exxon companies plans to infiltrate to other oil producing countries in Africa besides Equatorial Guinea and Chad where it already has a solid base. Employee welfare The two companies value the welfare of their employees by giving them good salaries, house allowances, transport allowances etc. The employees are also entitled to a health insurance policy from the companies. Moreover, the sacking and the layoff procedures are properly documented in the company rules and regulations hence allowing employees to plan their future in advance in case of loss of employment. Differences between Safeway Inc. and Exxon Mobil Company Safeway Inc Exxon Mobil Company Brand Safeway company deals in chain of retail supermarkets. The employees therefore have to use a suitable marketing strategy that would help to improve the sales of its products. Employee exposure Employees in this company have minimal exposure to the challenges facing the corporate business. This is because the products of most supermarkets are nearly the same hence there is minimal decrease of market. Salaries The amounts of salaries offered to the employees are slightly lower than those of other employees in the same position in other companies. This may be as a result of employees having minimal tasks in the company. Exxon Mobil is a multinational company which deals with oil and gas products. The employees of this company must therefore be well versed with various world markets and trends that would help them to infiltrate new world markets. Exxon Mobil exposes its employees to challenges in the business world hence allowing them to gain the required knowledge and expertise. Being a multinational company, it is faced with various competitors in the new markets thus its employees must work harder to stabilize its profit levels. The salaries offered to the employees are higher compared to other stakeholders in the same position in other companies. This can be attributed to the profitability and success of the company’s business activities. 4. Organization that I would have a career with I would wish to work for Safeway Inc. because of my experience in its business activities. Having worked for the last seven years in a lower store (grocery); I am well versed with the operations of the supermarket business. As the head of marketing department in Safeway Inc, I would be able to apply the knowledge gained through my previous interactions with the customers hence I will be able to meet their demands. This would help in improving the sales of the company hence resulting to its profitability. Compared to Exxon Mobil Company, Safeway Inc. provides for personal satisfaction because of less travelling. Less travelling is vital for future planning and settling down with my family members. Also, the availability of free time due to less working hours in Safeway Inc. would allow me to enroll for evening classes so as to further my education. Moreover, my interest and passion for the supermarket business would be beneficial in the creation of new ideas that would result in the profitability of the organization. For example, I would be able to advocate for more sales promotion and discounts so as to boost customer loyalty thus retaining of customers.
