 Qualitative text analysis - Interview analysis Ritchie and Spencer (1994) framework approach Stage 1: Transcription For the for interviewed managers, word for word or Verbatim transcriptions have been provided and anonymized to protect the company’s, interviewees’ and interviewers identities. Transcription process has provided a great opportunity to for the stage of familiarization where note taking involves understanding each interviewer more. Stage 2: Familiarization with the interview This section includes writing a memo for each of the interviewees. The aim is to interpret each interview to identify key ideas and recurrent themes. The major research questions involve what the job of a project manager is like; who the stakeholders for project managers are; and the management of project managers. Interview No. 10103 Position: A construction project consultant is prepared through intense coursework but only 20% of what the learnt concept is applicable. This is the entry-level job to construction project management. Skills: as a consultant project manager for construction, knowledge of how the industry works particularly construction technology, which helps in identification of contractor limitations, contractor abilities, working with a quantity surveyor, and understanding the role of an architect. In addition, hands on skills and experience in about 18 months in form of sandwich placement are essential. Customer relationship management or relationship marketing are also required when dealing with stakeholders who do or do not understand the construction work Abilities: ability to work in a team, ability to work independently especially since little supervision if available and it’s up to an individual to map their career. Strong analytical skills are essential for understanding what projects or tasks involves doing now and what can wait for another day. Adaptability works well since the company management structure changes to meet the needs of a client hence client driven teamwork with project support officers Motivation: passion for architecture limited by inability to draw but soldered by a passion to procure buildings, and understanding how to put them together. Additionally, the interviewee also had a preferred company to work for after the course. Doing something new every day and freedom are two major likes for the job. Performance reviews offer feedback from manager. Room for career advancement: the broadness of project management for construction leaves room for advancement into more challenges (advancing from a consultant to a project manager) which prevent one from remaining at the same level. Supervision: Consultants work under supervision of project managers and have to seek approval to remain compliant with regulations and rules and requirements by clients. Roles: consultants manage the close out of projects by processes and systems development and offer relevant information to all stakeholders to allow them resume business like compliance certificates and facilitating ten years period of company liabilities to project owners. Keeping all records regarding each undergoing and completed project Stakeholders: include contractors who build and employs sub-contractors like plumbers, architects design rooms; school governors; school head teachers; bursars; parents; councilors in the council board; the consulting company for coordination. Working with stakeholders involves face-to-face meetings to develop and retain relationships and paperwork Age and gender: young male Dislikes: open-ended nature of project closing and difficulties in performance gauging Interview No. 10104 Position: 2years six months as a client’s project manager, Roles: involve educating clients owing to their variations in experiences, and resistance to learn about projects. Additionally, project manager supervises other project managers from the company, contact person between council and the company, recording expenses, issuing invoices, handover completed project and do final documentation, assisting in stalled projects and overseeing splitting and re-tendering, checking on project tendering, guiding clients, enhance continuity and distillation of information through numerous projects. Motivation: large scale project management with Building schools for the future project, wanted to be an architect but could not draw although enjoyed the construction methodology, have a company in mind like Demings Expertise: applicable across all project management for construction companies from costing, design, planning and actual development, universal for all projects Microsoft, PRINCE2, Supervision: no supervision but requires using cutting edge knowledge to deliver the goals of the client, works with the company director to deliver projects in a way that appeals to the client Stakeholders: councilors, board of governors, head teachers, contractors Teamwork: work with company director; work with team of project managers, client engagement, and teamwork with private individuals, property developers Skills: IT literate to answer emails, phone calls, reports development, communications skills to mediate between the project team and design team, strong understanding of what projects and how concepts integrate, have 18 months placement in project management in construction, Initial role: junior manager doing all junior work, Career advancement: high chances given the broadness of the field, moving from one discipline to the other based one’s strengths, caring and nurturing and attentive, Affiliations: Association of project managers focusing on defining competencies of project managers but no specific project management training since knowledge is universal, Likes: finishing a project that is a tangible asset, be prepared to give answers, directions, delivery of client’s requirements to satisfaction, corrections especially where delivery is not competent Dislikes: disillusioned clients with very high expectations or lack interest in project, nervous working with new people, take the blame when things go wrong, Winning a lottery: invest in project Management Company Work life balance: dependent on the industry and the company which is the employer and which is flexible enough for now Interview No. 10105 Position: construction project manager, account director at company headquarters, only 20% of the skills are utilized and nothing near personal capacity. Underutilization is from the major construction project point of view, while optimal utilization is from Croydon’s point of view. Age: 56 years Gender: male Roles: setting up professional advice framework for procurement department, communication link between client and the council, managing account payments and bills and resources, supervises 25 project managers but not as a line manager, customer relationship management, understanding client organizational dysfunctional issues and adapting to work with them, offering professional advice on cost and commercial, mentor junior staff, Expertise: civil engineering with experience in project management at British Airways, Swiss bank, Strength: ability to turn around falling projects, ability to deal with difficult clients especially through identification of conflicts of interest and divorcing such roles to have clear lines of communication, Likes: Great talent is not lost to the drain since numerous tasks requiring high qualifications and experience is always available, to be associated with success, make a difference, add value. Would like to work closer home, which is not the case with his current position and work with a client who values all skills, and not just question it all the time. Working with private sector is also satisfying given that decision making is fast and turning around from wrong decisions is also fast compared to the a local authority which is slower for the same results. Leaving for another job: yes with conditions, but given his age, leaving is not an option now Winning a lottery: would mean resignation from current position, Work life balance: poor Stakeholders: the company, management Project Company Interview No. 10106 Position: project manager, 15% working for the company and the rest working with the client Gender: female Age: Work experience: Croydon 5 years, as a part of housing team and education team Roles: overseeing housing programmes with 5 contracts, not supervising anyone, and coordinating construction of houses. Additionally, she has to follow up complaints until addressed even though this may take long. Additionally, she is required to analyze housing situations and resolving them to avoid stagnation of the projects and satisfactorily handle any complaint. . Experience: freelance quantity Surveyor, worked with MDC a government organization as a project manager, Supervision: reports to the client and not the line manager she has given that there is rare communication between them, one main person when reporting to the client but different stakeholders, works is assigned through email or inquiry and goes to stakeholders, client, consultant, or resident. Motivation: wanted to work for the Company if not a Freelance surveyor, Entry to the company: approached by the company, Skills: independent thinker, works with little supervision, can work in a team, consultative, excellent communication skills, Likes: working outside her expertise and experiencing strategic challenges to make her grow in her career. Dislikes: there are unclear job roles for The Company and Croydon and The Company needs to define clear roles on what services to the client. Dislikes lengthy internal council processes that delay projects and impact on relationships. Autonomy: there is little autonomy with this role.
