It analysis methodology, validity and the general format of the paper giving its prone and cones. Julie Dickinson analyses the employee’s preferences and pay system in different companies. She uses one to one semi structured interviewed where 84 responded were interviewed to ascertain their opinion on the different approaches which are used by different companies in rewarding their employees. The main aim of the study was to determine the best way which most employees prefer in determining their salary and also how the criteria used in rewarding employees influences their performance. Interviewed schedules were used with research questionnaires where each responded were asked his/her viewed on the current salary status. Using structured questionnaires have many advantages. First, structured questionnaires are practical and gives first hand information from affected parties themselves hence more reliable compared to other methods of data collection. One is able to collect large number of data from large population within a short period of time which is not possible with observation or experiment method of data collection hence the researcher was able to collect data from 84 respondent within a short time (Bryman and Bell, 2011). Lastly through using structured questionnaire, the researcher was able to quantify the data and use the same in criticizing the current research in the same field (Bryman and Bell, 2011). The data collection method has several weaknesses which brings questions to the validity of the outcome. First questionnaires are susceptible to observer biases like the 84 responded which were interviewed will give what their feelings are which might be biased. Secondly Hawthorne effect where the people who are being interviewed might perform much better because they are aware that they are being observed. This will have an influence on the result conducted by the researcher. Unlike observation which does not rely on the people’s opinions, a questionnaire relies on the people’s opinion (Saunders et al, 2007). The researcher has not given hint on the validity test and reliability test of the work samples. Researcher has not given the total population design and the methodology which was used to arrive at the population of 84. This brings the question of generalization of the result into question hence cannot be relied on. The paper is well presented in general but there are few observations which can be depicted. The general arrangement of the work is as per the general rule, where when presenting a research paper, it starts with abstract, followed by introduction which gives the background of the study, research objectives/aims, then research hypothesis (Sekaran, 2003). Julie Dickinson did not give his hypothesis of the work but highlighted the aims of the research. The literature review is well presented starting with the old findings and concluding with the current research work in the same area of the study (Cooper and Schindler, 2006) The empirical study is well presented throughout the research paper with adequate references throughout the paper. References are well given and are as per the rule (Cooper and Schindler, 2006). Though theoretical framework is largely lacking as one may expect the theory of labor and wage to be discussed and other theories like Maslow which deals with human needs but throughout the text this is lacking. The conceptual framework is not presented in the research hence the paper is not well presented has , a good starting point of relating the variables the dependent and independent variables is through explaining them through conceptual framework. From 1980, the pay determination methods has greatly changed as pointed out in the literature review. One of the key areas where changes have taken place is the decline in pay determination through collective bargaining. This particular assumptions is not particularly true has we have seen widespread of labor unrest across the world pointing out the power of bargaining. In the modern liberalized world with strong and vibrant labor unions, they influence the pay structure of most workers across the world currently compared to older days. Though, the current workforce is more flexible has stated, this does not in any way influence the collective bargaining power of workers but in essence strengthens the labor unions(Cooper and Schindler, 2006). The arguments that the current strategy to have dynamic workforce within the organization has resulted to new methods of redesigning workers compensation might be true to an extent but however much labor is flexible, specialization and division of labor still play a key role in designing organization structures, employees role hence compensation. In the analysis, the responded talks of multi dimensional nature of the work as one of the factors which brings differential in pay, they included four common phenomenon’s as the guidelines in determining the pay. These four phenomenon include s i. Knowledge ii. Skills iii. Abilities and iv. Experience The result from responded reflect the common view held by many and it is true. The iterative nature of the four common pay determination shows that the questionnaire was poorly structures and most of the questions which were being asked were leading questions (Curwin and Slater, 2002). The presentation of the result of the outcome ought to be both in tables, pie charts graphs using only tables is not elaborate enough since tables are not easy to read and interprets like graphs. The two unpopular criteria are not common but to some extent, they do apply in current labor market since there should be equity in payment of workers with similar qualification and job description. The 28% of the population which argues that market forces influences the labor compensation is also right (Morris, 2003) The presentation of the result is not all inclusive; the researcher has intensively used descriptive statistics in presenting the result without including qualitative analysis. the descriptive data lacks basic tables like and values of standard deviation, mean, median which can be used in explaining the data (Yin, 2003) After the discussion of the result, the researcher has failed to give conclusion of the study. Conclusion is very important in survey study has it give the overall view of the researcher and the way forward. The beneficiaries of the study initially were not indicated hence there is no recommendation of the study. A good research should have both the conclusion as the ending point of any study. The work from introductory to the end has not fully followed the right format of a good research work. The recommendation is not specific hence lack credibility and does not give the way forward of the research. This leaves the articles hanging.
