The society of today is connected with a variety of information sources of means of communication that are made available at home, school, community, and work. According to Rheingold, this is the beginning of the next social revolution (2003). In the UK, 75% of the general population has mobile phones and out of that, 90% comprises of the young adults (Crabtree, Nathan and Roberts 2003). Today, many of the phones have the ability to connect to the Internet wirelessly. Personal digital assistants (PDAs) are hand-held computers are becoming widespread and employers have distributed them since their workforce is an eager group to keep productivity on the move (BBC 2004). On the other hand, laptops being well-established technology, have gained new appeal since they are able to be combined with newer mobile phones for connectivity, which means it offers a mobile web experience that is truly unique. It is the prevalence of mobile technologies that have become a motivator through carrying put this investigative research. Among children, mobile technologies are widespread already and, therefore, it is sensible for the educational system that has limited communication technology and information resources to make the most out of what children bring to the learning environment. According to Sharples, these devices should not be considered disruptive, but rather, educators need to exploit the potential of the devices (2003). Furthermore, they should look out for ways of putting the devices into good use and which bring benefits to the learning arena. It is evident that mobile technologies provide students with an opportunity for fundamental change. Therefore, mobile technologies have been able to enable the progression of learning activities and knowledge construction among students to be effective and dynamic. In addition, these technologies have given students ownership over their situated learning activities, which have made them responsible for their own work.

Some other technologies include the classroom response systems, which consist of individual devices for students to respond to anonymous and multiple question choices administered by educators through a central server. However, this technology is static since it is used in only one location. Nevertheless, it is personal because it is small in size is allocated for one user. Other mobile technologies include street kiosks, interactive museum displays among other kinds of installations, which offer pervasive access to learning and information experiences. Therefore, in such instances, the learner becomes portable and not the delivery of technology. These technologies are referred to as shared portable technologies because they are suited for multiple-user interactions. Examples include video-conferencing facilities and interactive classroom whiteboards. Mobile technologies introduction has seen the rise of communication in the world, and this has brought positive value to the lives of many individuals. It is apparent to note that mobile technologies have been embraced by groups of people around the globe, and this has changed the mode of communication among diverse groups.
