Future of Computing Profession - Essay Example

The integration of computing is in every field of life. It has its boundaries ranging from “Information Technology, traditional Computer Science, information science, computer engineering, database engineering, network engineering, systems engineering, software architecture, human-computer interface design, computational science, computational statistics, numerical modeling, library sciences, and several more.” (Denning, 1998). All the fields of computer profession have a common conceptual baseline but different professional practices.

A number of these professional branches have diverged into further more disciplines. When looked at as a whole, each of these professional combine together to represent the profession of computing as a whole. As the advancements in technology are continuing at a very rapid rate, the field of research is also venturing into a number of new horizons. With every advancement and invention the profession of computing is advancing as well. Human-computer interface via eye tracking and sense of touch and voice have already been enabled.

Ten years from now it is highly likely that each of the computing devices would be voice, audio enabled. Further along a few decades it is proposed that artificial intelligence would become perfection and holographic images of computing devices would interact with humans in the form of computers only. It is in line with these advancements that the computing profession would also shape itself. It would focus the requirements of the latest advancements. Since hardware components would become extremely compact in size the work of computing hardware engineers would lessen and they would not have to continue making conventional keyboards and personal computers.

Professional in understanding and embedding artificial intelligence would be required. The jobs of manually entering data in to computers would also minimize or rather eliminate entirely. Professionals excelling in the monitoring and handling of wireless communications would prevail and those involved in constructing and operation of hardware LAN based network connectivity would cease to exist. Computing profession would incorporate learning and studying via it. The use of hardware copies and books would become obsolete and instructors would also become computing professionals.

Berger Eric(2008) quotes projected development in computing as, “ A number of potentially-transformative technologies have a real chance to show critical breakthroughs by the late 2020s: Molecular manufacturing; artificial general intelligence; synthetic biology; human augmentation biology. Individually and combinatorially powerful, how they emerge will depend on political, economic and cultural choices made today. “ (Eric, 2008) Thus, the professional of computing would also include professionals specializing in human cloning and biotechnology etc.
