Case Study Questions [Student Name] [School] [Course/Number] 24/02/2016 [Instructor Name] Writing 2. Sirgany El Sarah (2016). Egypt: Officials claim mistaken identity after toddler sentenced to life. Retrieved from: http://edition.cnn.com/2016/02/23/africa/egypt-toddler-sentenced/index.html. In her article, Sarah adeptly assesses the justice system of Egypt in relation to the recent cases of mass sentencing since the ousting former President Mubarak. The country’s police and justice have been in haste of showing progress in their investigations into the political skirmishes that took place in the country in 2014. Particularly, this article zeroes in into a peculiar case of a three year child who is mistakenly sentenced to life after being found guilty of murder and public disturbance. The audacity of a High Court judge to order such a ruling considering that in 2014 the young boy had barely reached two years, is quite appalling. The boy’s father is forced to flee his hometown for fear of retaliation from the authorities. Such scenario of half-baked cases in the police departments coupled with an unfair judicial proceedings has shocked the Egyptians and the whole world (Sirgany, 2016). The future is however not that bleak, for a public outcry and protestations has seen the ruling overturned and the family redressed for the harm caused. As of now, lady luck smiled on the family, nevertheless, the people of Egypt should continue to fight for their rights and accountability within the government institutions. Reading 3. The Economist (2016). Wireless: the next generation. Retrieved from http://www.economist.com/news/business/21693197-new-wave-mobile-technology-its-way-and-will-bring-drastic-change-wireless-next. In technology, the saying change is permanent, is never truer as is displayed in this article. The changing technologies from 2G network five years ago, the industry is now palpable with expectation of 5G. The previous batch of 4G has not yet even been rolled out across the whole world, and research on 5G is gaining momentum with every dawn. Countries like America, Japan and South Korea have been identified as the leading developers of the new wireless technology. Technological firms especially in the mobile technology have also been identified as other major players in the invention of the new technology. The contemporary society has helped fuel the need for such technology, as the current crop of consumers prefer speed and sleekness in the technological products they decide to buy. Industries such as media and gamers stand to benefit most from the new technology. This new revolutionary idea will truly affect the world in numerous ways, particularly the sharing of information. Strategies 1. Communication is an essential part of our daily activities. This means that the gravity of having good communication skills to counter tricky situations when conversing with other people is very important. One such skill, is the ability to distract your listener when you are asked a hard question that you have to contemplate about for some time. The phrases below have proven to be helpful in such situations: “Please, give me a moment to confirm with what I have in my notes…” This allows you time to think as you shuffle your notes. “That’s a good question. Anybody in the audience would like to address the issue raised?” Asking this question to your audience will buy you time to think. “I would like to address your question in my next topic of presentation…” This will allow you time to think about your answer as the audience continue to patiently wait. Sometimes it will help to delve a little on the facts you know about the question, for example, “Good question. However, to understand better, it would be better if we start by looking at the history…” This allows you time to recollect your thoughts before giving a definite answer. If the question is in the middle of your presentation, saying that you will cover all questions at the end of your presentation would also give the presenter time to think and contemplate. Strategies 3. Each and every one of us has had a moment that they had difficulty sharing their ideas in English, irrespective of it being your first language or learnt in school. The most important detail is to know how to overcome the difficulty and still ensure your audience receive the intended message. The following actions have proven to of help in my personal experiences: When I first had difficulty in a speaking to some of my friends, I realized it occurred majorly due to use of technical or unfamiliar words saw fit was to resolve back to familiar ground then continue from there. It is quite useful during presentations to be armed with pictorial display in case of difficulty explaining a situation. Spoken Interaction1 Student: Hello Mr. Sullivan. I would like to borrow a minute of your time for some quick help on a research topic. Mr. Sullivan: Oh, hello? Please proceed, I have a class in the next few minutes. Student: Am good, sir. I am doing my final year project which requires an informed opinion from somebody of your stature. What do you think is the major contributing factor to drug abuse in colleges? Mr. Sullivan: Am quite honored that you chose me. I believe the underlying reason stems from peer pressure to take drugs. This pressure is often too much for some students to resist. Student: Thank you. That’s quite and observation. I would not like to waste more of your time, I believe that would be enough. Mr. Sullivan: You are welcome. (Proceeds to his next class.) Spoken production 5 The single most controversial topic in the medical industry is always associated with euthanasia. The most begging question is about it being ethical or immoral for a doctor to participate. Personally, I believe euthanasia should be considered ethical. I argue for the few patients who often are at the point of death and would rather be relieved from palliative care they are forced to endure. Basically, it’s about the quality of life at the end, there is no need for continued suffering for patients who the doctors feel have minimal probability of getting better. However, it’s fair that the arguments of those against euthanasia are taken into consideration. For instance, they argue that anybody who is suffering would be under a kind of pressure because medicine would tell them it’s the only option which undermines the whole relationship between them and medicine. This is against a medicine principle that aims on saving lives rather than assist in taking live hence the backing against euthanasia. Spoken production 6. The start of global warming coincided with one of the most changing events in the world, the industrial revolution. This is no mistake, considering that global warming is caused by the emission of carbon into the air. The carbon released into the atmosphere has over the years trapped heat in the world’s atmosphere which is causing the unprecedented changes in the climatic conditions as had been expected. The industrial revolution is the period in which automobiles were made and industries were built in huge numbers across the world. As the technology of green energy had not yet been developed, the operations were dependent on heat from wood and coal, which produce the carbon and other greenhouses gases. Writing 6. The day of departure had arrived. I remember it very well, since I was the first to wake up on that day. I had hardly slept, tensions rising in my stomach as I wondered what waited for on the other side, UK. This was to be one of the landmark days in my life. Wait! It would be a landmark day for my whole family as I was the first child of the family to go overseas for studies. Suddenly, a stinging call of my name rent the air, waking up everybody in the house. It was my mum, valiantly putting on a brave face despite the fears she had for me. Everything had been prepared yester night in preparation of my early departure. Songs and ululations rent the air as I emerged from my bedroom fully dressed for the journey to a new country. My only brother came and hugged me tight, it was proving to be too emotional for him. He let me go after a few minutes, wishing me a safe journey. After having a light breakfast, the whole family entered into our family car to take me to the airport.
