Alarming Situation in UK due to Heavy Rain Fall and Floods The most obvious reason for heavy rainfall which ultimately causes floods is the climate change. These possible changes in the climate are adversely affecting common people’s lives (Lean, 2014). A mixture of heavy rains, coastal surges and bitter storms results into a worst situation for UK citizens. Several states are at high risk of floods because of heavy rains. These rain falls usually happen throughout the year and thus results a huge flood which poorly damages human lives and their properties. These floods cause hundreds of people to leave their homes and take shelter in some safe places while the number of injuries and deaths is countless. The city Government has to suffer a lot of loss because the flooding usually results in a severe damage to buildings, houses, roads and other infrastructure. The whole system takes time and cost also to be rebuilt and used by general public. Therefore this loss is not only in physical terms but in monetary terms also. In other words flooding cause a lot of damages to the human life. Another problem is that these after floods there is a lot of water in the farmlands which actually damages the crops. Thus it’s a bad news for the farmers that their crops will be adversely damaged. Some of the portion of that crop can be replanted but the farmers may not be able to replace the whole crop production. When the farmers are unable to grow the required food demand of the state then there is a need to import the food items, because the economy itself is not able to meet the demands. When the businessmen buy that food from outside the country then it will definitely affect the food prices because most of the food items will be imported and thus businessmen will charge high prices for that. Now the flood affecters who are already suffered many other losses, have to bear these prices also. Therefore whole economy will be affected by these rains and floods through different ways. Usually critics argue that the houses are built on plain lands thus they are more open to the coming flood water. These flat plain lands are the easiest water channel in case of floods. Therefore if these houses are built on a high place like a hill top then it would be much safer. But if we look at the other side then building houses on hill tops is not feasible at all. The cost of such hill top houses is not acceptable for a common man; therefore he will prefer to live on a plain field in any case. People like plain lands usually because of ease and comfort of everything. A research study shows that 1.5% of UK is at risk from flooding from direct sea whereas 7% of the country is likely to flood from rivers. Nearly about 1.5m houses and almost 130,000 commercial buildings are at stake because of these heavy rains and floods. These facts show the severity of the floods. There can be many possible reasons for the floods except heavy rain falls. It is quite obvious now and also the report from metrological department also shows that these floods and heavy rain falls are because of major changes occurring in the climate. And this climate is changing because of global warming. Glaciers are now dangerous because of increasing temperature and heat on the Earth. These melting Glaciers are causing over flow of water in lakes and rivers thus results in a hazardous flood. Global warming is the apparent reason behind all the environmental destruction. Every type of pollution is dangerous for the climate. The forests trees are very much helpful in creating a barrier to the over flow of water from melting Glaciers. But people are not that much interested towards natural phenomena. Thus they usually cut trees in order to use them but if they promote the message publically to grow more and more trees then it would be beneficial for our coming generations. The excessive cutting of trees may lead to soil erosion. This is also a kind of pollution or we can say a disruptive activity. Research studies show that the effect of climate change is going to be worse in the coming generations. One of the top most reasons for the climate change is the gas emissions in a large quantity not only from UK but also from the whole world. The resources of these emitted gases can be natural and man-made also. These emitted gases increase the climate temperature thus causing changes in the environment. Scientists are predicting that the effects of this global warming will be more harmful in the future because of increasing temperature and increasing water level in the rivers, lakes and seas. If we talk about the history of the heavy rains and the floods in UK then one incident is simply unforgettable because of its severity. It was January 1953 when there was UK’s worst ever flood came because of a combination of high tide, Tidal surge and heavy rains. The most pathetic situation was the absence of any kind of flood alarming systems. Most of the people were affected because they didn’t expect that. More than 500 people were died. There was a lot of damage caused to the buildings, houses and roads. This was not that single time but UK faced such situations many times in 2000, 2003 and 2007. All these years are not in a good memory. For a safe a protective infrastructure there should be proper arrangement for handling all such kinds of disasters.
