From the onset, it is important to note that the nature of diagnosis is the determining factor for his subsequent trial or acquittal. This document presents a theoretical and practical approach adopted by the Forensic Inpatient Unit in determining Rory’s suitability for trial based on his psychosocial history, and other apparent symptoms accompanying his current mental state. Apparently, there are both ethical and legal constraints to the case of Rory that need close attention – constraints that will be addressed in subsequent recommendations.

As such, attempts have been made to link the present case to previous similar cases, including case laws relating to the psychological issues encountered in the case; including competence to stand trial, risk of dangerousness, and insanity, all of which have diverse implications on the way the individual will be treated by the police and the judicial division of the county. Further descriptions of the case in regard to the forensic psychologist’s recommendations are presented hereafter.

In order to understand Rory’s actions and his seemingly worsening criminal record, we need to evaluate his actions on the back of relevant theoretical frameworks. The main theories against which his life trajectories are evaluated include the Life Course Theory (LCT) and the General Strain Theory (GST). The two theories are lightly described below.LCT is a framework against which subsequent events in the life of an individual can be evaluated to explain their present or consequent behavioral patterns.

For instance, LCT forms a basis against which we can easily reexamine the life events that contributed to an individual engaging in some addictive behaviors, such as excessive alcoholism, and the use of prohibited substances. Equally, the theory provides a background against which to examine the consequent engagement in crime, violence, success, and more paths to the destiny of the individual (Warr, 1998).
