Examples include marital rape, forced sex, attack on the body’s sexual organs sodomy, and forced prostitution. Sexual abuse can also be through attempts to undermine the sexuality of the victim. This entails treating a victim in a sexually offensive manner or speaking negatively about a person’s sexual performance, or withholding sex (Lombard, 2013).

Psychological abuse
Psychological abuse happens when someone instills or attempts to instill fear in another person. It involves acts such as threatening to physically harm the victim, to harm self or others, blackmailing, threatening to kidnap, or harassment. Psychological abuse can also occur when someone isolates or attempts to isolate another person from family, friends, or school, and work. Such actions include blocking access to means of transportation, access to phones, or undermining the personal relationships that the victim has with others (Leary, 2001).

Emotional abuse
This involves undermining or attempting to undermine the self-worth of the victim for example by calling names, insulting, manipulating their feelings, inducing guilt, and constant criticism (Lombard, 2013).
Economic abuse
This type of abuse happens when someone tries to make another person financially dependent by trying to take total control of his or her financial resources including the income that the victim has earned, withholding information regarding the victim’s bills, and preventing access to money among others (Caffrey, 2009).

According to the 2012 Personal Safety Survey, 34% of women have experienced some form of domestic violence from current or former intimate partners during their lifetime from the age of 16 years. Only 4% of men reported experiencing domestic violence from their partners in their lifetime (Mulroney, 2003).
