In the film, every event in time is treated episodically with each episode revealing some change in time. For instance, the movie begins at a time when Micky is still an amateur and is considered as just a weakling, who only helps other boxers build their reputation by defeating him. However, as time progresses Micky under the tutorage of his half brother Dicky, he matures in boxing before gradually rising through the ranks to become of the household names in boxing. The transformation of Dicky from a drug addict to a successful coach is also a manifestation episodically time is treated in the movie.

In general the movie revolves around the life of a young boxer who is trying to establish himself as a boxer. However, his efforts are constantly met with frustrations from his exploitive mother, Alice Ward, and his cocaine addicted brother Dick Eklund, who are willing to do anything even it means fighting with a professional boxer, in order to get as much as money as possible. At some point, in his struggles with addiction, Micky’s Brother Dick gets arrested for trying to steal a car, marking a turning point in his life as he contemplates to bring his life back together.

On the other hand, Micky through the help and encouragement of his father decides to live out his family and get back into boxing. He slowly begins his road to success through minor fights under the management of his father. . The reunion becomes more than just a game of boxing but rather a comeback for the two brothers and their family as a whole. The movie winds up when Micky becomes the world champion. On a similar note, as the movie portrays, it is also possible to rise from a looser to a winner through determination. The main theme of the movie is determination to be the best even if it entails weighing up the value of family against that of one’s own career in the hope of entangling oneself from the chains of manipulation.

Through the entire movie, it is evident that Micky’s mother, Alice, was always ready to put his son’s life at risks by organizing fights that were sometime fatal to his son’s life. Eventually, Micky’s decides to do away with his family, particularly his manipulative mother and an addict brother, which later turns out as the beginning of a successful career. Through encouragement from his girlfriend Charlene and his father and later a reformed brother, Micky finally achieves his lifelong dream of becoming an icon in boxing.

In the movie, the main conflict that exists is choosing between family life and personal life. As earlier seen,in the movie the main character Micky is faced in a conflict of having to live under the umbrella of a family derailing him in his quest to become
