The Position of Love in Poetry Love is the strongest feeling that human may have. In the same manner that it could make people immensely happy, it could also make them intensely sad as expressed by poets in various eras. Happiness caused by love is typically expressed in romantic poems while sadness is expressed in nostalgic poems. To begin with, one should admit that for the poet the problems of love and death are inseparable and closely bound. The world, in which the poet lives and loves, is unfair, full of cruelty, pain and violence. With the help of verses on love it is possible to judge the moral climate of the whole era. Lyrics reflect a soul of the poet, his personal destiny and experiences. Furthermore, the subject of love in poetry draws attention of readers of any age and any literary tastes, as it a complex, unclear feeling which accompanies the mankind during a long period of time. In this work, we are to disclose all the aspects of such feeling as love in poetry and this research will be based on the following works: “Sonnet 11” written by William Shakespeare (April 26, 1564 – 1594), “I loved you first: but afterwards your love” by Cristina Rosetti (December 5 1830 – 29 December 1894), “Ode to Pity” by Jane Austen (1775-1817), “The day is gone, and all its sweets are gone!” by John Keats and “Love letter” by Sarah Manguso (2006). All people deserve that what they have and they should appreciate that, even if it is not what they want. For example, “Sonnet 11” written by William Shakespeare is about the nature which is a creator of everything in the world; about the committed love and wise (William Shakespeare.”). It is worth to mention, that there are phrases which have special meanings: “one of thine” denotes a child, and actually this mean that children are the successors and without them society will not survive, and they are actually a result of love; “herein” means in marriage and children and this explains that children should grow up within a family; “threescore year” denotes the age of sixty and shows that people can love at any age; “for store” is for breeding, which is also a part of love (Shakespeare). The speaking person has not changed within the poem, and the author continues to state that people should not refuse from their initial mission. Finally, People should not be afraid of their feelings and desires, because they should make their dreams true while it is not too late, and to fall love. There are not so many famous female names in the Anglo-American poetry of the XIX century, but Christina Rossetti deserves her position in that list. Her verses are sonorous and melodious. They are often sad or even tragic (“Christina Rossetti”). The poem “I loved you first: but afterwards your love” is dedicated to the expression of the romantic love which can appear between man and woman. It reminds a letter to the beloved person. In her foreword, Christina Rossetti claims that Beatrice and Laura, the muses of Dante and Petrarch respectively, were “preceded by a bevy of unnamed ladies “donne innominate.” She writes from the female perspective to demonstrate that these ladies also possess attractiveness, not just charm. There is a phrase which discloses the main point in the work: “I loved and guessed at you, you construed me, and loved me for what might or might not be –“ (Rossetti). The author tries to explain that, love can last forever and in general, it is an important feeling. The speaking person has not changed within the poem, and the author continues to prove, how it is important to be together. The poem expresses the idea of romantic love and that it is impossible to live without it. In other words, People should always try to find the way to be together because “I” does not sounds so perfect like “We”. It would be unfair not to mention the fact that Jane Austen is also in the list of the most important women in the history (“Jane Austen”). Maybe that was the reason why she wrote a poem “Ode to pity” which discloses the expression of the disappointed love between man and woman. The author devoted this poem to Mils Austen, from a thorough knowledge of her pitiful nature (Austen). Here it is explained that many things can happen in the way we do not expect. Austen tries to explain that, everything that surrounds people plays an important role in their lives. The poem expresses the idea of disappointed love and that it is impossible to live without it. The main goal of this work is to emphasize that it is important to accept everything as it appears, even if it is not what you expect. We cannot ignore the fact, that the poem “The day is gone, and all its sweets are gone!” written by John Keats tells a story about love that misses someone. This work is filled with warm words and feelings. It describes the best aspects of love. At the first part it is obvious that love is an important feeling, because when you are in love, you notice only positive features of the partner. The second part shows that it is important not to miss it (Keats). The poem expresses the idea of love which is easy to lose or not to notice. One should understand that those who look for love will definitely find it. Nevertheless, one should admit that John Keats was fond of poetry of Renaissance era and this tradition affected in a harmonious combination of beauty and truth, thought and plasticity. Thus, this tradition perpetuated in his work in the form of romantic motives of a miracle, dream and imagination (“John Keats”). The fifth example is a love letter, the author of which is Sarah Manguso and it is about nostalgic love for someone who is already gone. This writing describes that people are not long-lasting, but love. They should always take out the best from their lives in order not to regret. There are a few phrases that can make people to reevaluate all what they have, among them are: On the day you fell through a cloud; you were real and not just a dream of clouds (Manguso). The writer describes a situation or problem that cannot be solved, as people cannot bring back something that they once lost. Here it is possible to get to know that people should appreciate each moment they spend with dear to them people. Life is too short, to waste it on unnecessary things. It is better to spend the free time with those who you love. To draw the conclusion, one should say that poetry is a kind of love, love to nature, family, motherland and life. Love is the highest manifestation of human essence which is aggravating internal contradictions of the person in works mentioned above. Furthermore, each author experienced such feeling, because only the person which is in love can create fine poems. Perhaps, poetry is capable to show all sides of this emotion. The history of great human feelings expressed in poetry and at the same time perpetuated in it.
