Bacteria in gut affect brain, mood and behavior Three billion years ago the earth began its life. At first the life was just unicellular. After hundreds of millions of years, life evolved from simple to complex and then anaerobic bacterium. During this time, cells went through endosymbiosis. And after hundreds of millions of years again the land saw its first plant grow on its chest. Then this planet had magnificent creatures like dinosaurs crawling on it and when they became extinct mammals evolved.

Many of the earths creatures have a simple brain just like anemone or jellyfish. It is because they are invertebrates. Mammals, on the other hand, have complex brains. Researchers have tried to change the gut of two mice. An alteration in the stomach changed the activity of the mice. The experiment included interchanging the guts between the two mice. The scientists later observed that the mouse who loved swimming before became afraid of water when his stomach was replaced. The central issue is the perception that emotions are governed mainly from the brain.

There is so much more behind emotional drives. It is a common expression of having a gut feeling. People often feel intense emotions in their guts. That is why fear and intense excitement leaves a ripple like effect in the guts. This effect has been scientifically proven. The researchers conduct experiments inside the lab on animals like mouse. The scientist can perform various experiments on animals and safely assume that the same process occurs in humans. There are mainly two opposing views.

There is a school of thought proposing that humans are created differently from other animals. They are the anti-thesis that theory of evolution. The counter argument is that the incredible similarity between humans and other organisms is enough evidence of the theory of evolution. If gut feelings drive mood swings and behaviors then it needs discussion about the human behavior related with economics. For instance, marketers and business analysts are keenly interested in the way people exhibit shopping behavior.

There is a particular feeling when people have money, and there is a different one when they are struggling with money. This behavior directly impacts the way they buy products or budget their money. The issue also relates with the debate that there must be products that can help generate better gut feelings in people. Are their products that a person should take to improve the health of their guts? What kind of economic impact can it have on pharmaceutical and grocery products? There’s a common perception that eating yogurt gives healthy bacteria that helps develop a better stomach and digestive process.

Gastrointestinal tract packs tens of thousands of species of bacteria (Khazan, 2014). It is common knowledge that they help regulate the digestive process and play a role in maintaining weight and craving for food (Khazan, 2014). So if gut feeling drives the mind then these microbes would also alter the brain chemistry. Feeling happy sad or depressed can also be interpreted in terms of hormones. The brain releases endorphins when certain emotions are felt. Different experiments have already shown that when probiotics are taken it has an effect on the peoples mood.

People feel happier or less depressed when they take healthy bacteria. This can impact the microeconomics because people want to feel happier. If there is more widespread research advertising to people that they can feel happier by taking certain foods or medicine, it will change the way people shop.ReferenceKhazan, Olga. "When Yogurt Affects the Brain." The Atlantic. Atlantic Media Company, 23 Sept. 2014. Web. 25 Nov. 2014.
