Theoretical discussions Affiliation: In what ways and how effectively can governments facilitate the development of major industries and contribute to national competitiveness? According to the Dicken (2010) and Chandler (1977), the role of government is to regulate its economy and not only be its custodian. An example of the regulation is increasing or reducing taxation depending on economic progress of the nation. The multinational companies bring development in every nation which means the government is spared having to be directly involved financially in these developments.

The money they would have used in for example education and infrastructural development as many projects in Africa are should be channelled towards development of the major industries. The multinational companies do not always fulfil their share of bargain of developing the country they are in economically (Dicken, 2010) and this becomes a great challenge to the local people. In order for the government to ensure that their people benefit from the revenue and work by the multinational companies, they should insist on being shareholders in the project as well as provide its own set of conditions before allowing the company to set base in the nation.

By the companies including the local people, it will mean that soon the locals will have knowledge, expertise and financial means to start their own businesses which will contribute towards competitiveness as well as building up industries (Reich, 2010). The more the multinational companies set camp in the country, the more the revenue will be collected and the more the national competition will be on the increase. The more the revenue is generated by the companies which goes to the government, the more the government will be in a position to build its own industries as well as develop the others already present and modernize them.

This will be possible only if the human capital is being fully utilized as well as the managers and top officials of the government are coordinating with each other. The government can emulate the theory by (Chandler, 1977) which indicates that empowering middle management in all the industries will mean that more work will be carried out and so will proper coordination of duties and competition. Since majority of the localities the multinationals set base are the developing countries and these are the ones with need for increased industries, then the lack of structure in these countries will not be a hindrance for the governments’ development based on this theory but their gateway to success.

Other than these, they can enforce their human capital just as explained by Reich (2010) and ensure that the people in the nation contribute to building it. With everyone being involved in combination with the multinational companies, then the development will be on the increase. The only catch to this is for the government to ensure that they have an agreement with the MNCs to hire local talent so that some of the benefits and profits can remain in the nation. As for competitiveness enhancement, it should be left to the middle management and those at lower managerial positions.

These are very competitive individuals all aiming for the top seats in not only government but private sector as well. The government in this case can only act as custodian and not regulate the competitiveness is major developments are to be seen. It is possible for the government to handle and make all the suggestions above possible as they make the laws and regulate them while still holding the power and authority of the nation. They should channel that power to development rather than politics only.
