Managing the activities of construction-related projects involves a complex system of knowledge and forward-thinking. The success of a construction project involves the influence of a variety of factors, including project design and complexity, specific contractual agreements, camaraderie and professional relationships amongst project members, and the overall motivation and efficiency of the construction manager.Basic duties of construction managers (CMs) include meeting with architects, surveyors, and planners prior to implementing a building, planning work schedules, preparation of the intended construction site, and continuous reporting of project progress to the client (Learn Direct, 2007).

These are the tangible characteristics of the construction managers' day-to-day operational activities; a set of rather common sense, generic management responsibilities. Construction managers are referred to by a wide variety of job titles including construction superintendent, production manager, project manager, executive construction manager, or general contractor (Gartaganis, 1989). Depending on the nature of the construction project, the site manager will maintain any number of professional job titles, further indicating that specific duties are highly dependent on the manager's intended purpose on the job (Gartaganis).

The construction industry, specifically from a management point of view, is also affected by the skills, abilities, and competence of architects, quantity surveyors, and project engineers. However, outside of the aforementioned external forces, it is the construction manager (CM) who is the most crucial to ensuring a timely project and to certify that the project maintains minimal, controllable disruption to the activities of any particular construction job.
