Strategic Development: How Can Leadership Influence Change In Abu Dhabi Police

3.0 Introduction

This section is particularly relevant to this paper as it presents a comprehensive that will guide the data collection process of the study. The importance of this section is substantiated by the sensitivity that the data holds in the development of statistically accurate conclusions. Ideally, the identification of the main research methodology will be achieved in tandem with the core objectives of the paper. The selection of the sample frame as well as the sample size will serve the interests of answering the probe regarding the impacts of strategic development and leadership on the developmental changes in the Abu Dhabi Police Department. From the contextual analysis of the nature of this research, it will be imperative to consider the police force as the core source of the sample data. For more accurate results, the sample frame should be within the Abu Dhabi region with special focus on the Abu Dhabi Police Headquarters.

3.1 The Research Philosophy

Most productive and reliable research frameworks are commonly based on a particular research philosophy. Depending on the intentions as well as the preferences of the researcher, he or she can embrace different types of research philosophies notably: epistemology, ontology, and axiology. In the event where a given researcher prefers realistic assumptions, he or she will adopt the ontological research philosophy . In some cases, the researcher would want to critique or evaluate the accuracy of certain theories hence the adoption of the epistemological research methodology. Lastly, the axiological research philosophy will emphasize on the moral and ethical perspectives of given theoretical context as well as data collection approach .

By extension, the research philosophy can also inculcate the following standpoints: interpretivism, realism, positivism or pragmatism. Appropriately, research that is guided by positivism will consider the rationalism position in the presentation of arguments and conclusions. On the other hand, a realistic research philosophy will embrace conclusions that are justifiable through empirical facts and annotations . Interpretivism, as one of the most commonly used research philosophy, encompasses the social responsibilities of the society in its bid to survive . Lastly, the pragmatic approach tends to consolidate the propositions behind interpretivism and positivism, making it the most holistic philosophy . However, this paper will embrace interpretivism following the wide contextual coverage on leadership, which is an essential social factor.

3.2 Research Design

To collect the most relevant set of data, this research will have to adopt a well-planned research design. A typical research design will lay out an ideal timeframe that will enhance the optimality of the research process. Following the nature of this research, it will cover a time span of 30 days. Twelve days will be used in the collection and sorting of both the primary and the secondary data. The analysis of the data will be allocated eight days to enhance the accuracy of the results. After the data is analyzed, five days will be needed for the compilation of the provisional results as well as the documentation. The draft will then be submitted for review and critique from professionals and other shareholders for three days. The remaining two days from the 30-day time frame are used to internalize any form of delays or rescheduling of the administration of the questionnaires.

With the timeframe in place, the research will adopt case study research design. Ideally, the case study approach is strategically vital in this case as it tries to replicate a theoretical situation through the utilization of raw data from the given field of study . This method will exclude other irrelevant variables in the collection of the data. Noteworthy, special considerations will be placed in the police force in Abu Dhabi with other professions treated as outliers in the study. This way, the data collected will be specifically made to meet the objectives of this research paper.

With the presentation of the secondary data through the Literature Review section of this paper, the methodology will seek to evaluate the perspectives of the propositions by other researchers. To achieve this, the case study approach will provide for the collection and analysis of primary data in a bid to present a comparative base for the already existing works within the given study realm.

By motives, research designs can be classified as exploratory, descriptive or causal. The exploratory research exploits study gaps for establishing new concepts. The Causal research design, on the other hand, evaluates and describes the standpoints adopted by different theories . The research can also be tasked with the analysis of previous works of research within the given field of study under the descriptive motive. To provide a bigger comparative base, this research will adopt the causal as well as the descriptive motives of research.

1.3 Research Approach

Regarding the approach, a given work of research can either be inductive or deductive in nature. Contextually, the inductive approach is characterized by the introduction of new concepts into a given field of study . As the direct opposite, the deductive approach questions other works of research with the minimum theoretical addition to a given scope of the study .

This research will adopt the inductive approach. This will be met through the collection and analysis of raw data from the identified sample frame. The results of such a process will- in most cases- develop new theories regarding the impacts of leadership on the strategic development of the Abu Dhabi Police Department. To support the quality of the results from the data analysis, the paper will also provide grounds to compare the results with those of the secondary data.

1.4 Research Methods

The data used in any work of research can either be quantitative or qualitative in nature. For a researcher to decide the ideal type of data approach to be used, he or she has to understand the description of the individual data forms . The qualitative nature is widely subjective in nature. The subjectivity of this data types is attributed to its ability to present the quality aspects of the data collected . Ideally, this approach will cover the opinions as well as the perceptions of the respondents in questions. In scientific research, for instance, the sample used in the collection of the data will be comprised of professionals within the given field of study . As a social study, this research will prefer the use of qualitative data since the respondents are specifically confined to the police forces.

While adopting an objective approach, the quantitative data is quantifiable. The quantification of this data means that it is mostly explained through statistical terms that- to many readers- are hard to interpret. Therefore, the quantitative data should be subjected to statistical procedures in a bid to establish a clear meaning that can be pegged to the objectives of the research paper in question . Following the definition of the nature of the quantitative data, it is clear that the adoption of the qualitative data outweighs the use of the quantitative approach in a research of this caliber.

1.5 Research Strategies and instrumentation

The definition of a specific area of study is vital in the development of any research work. In this case, this research will consider the ideal demographical as well as the geographical sample frame. Demographically, the respondents will be police officers by profession and, geographically, they will be from the Abu Dhabi Police Department. With the identification of the sample frame, the paper will consider the used use the sampling technique. This technique is justifiable since sampling is relatively cheaper following the handling of smaller data sets as opposed to the voluminous data that is characteristic of the population data. Additionally, the computation of the sample data is less prone to statistical errors as opposed to the collection and analysis of the population data . In this regard, therefore, the research will administer 200 questionnaires to the respondents from the Abu Dhabi Police force. Of the 200 questionnaires, 100 will be issued to the Abu Dhabi Police Department while the remaining will be issued to other neighboring police stations. After the data is collected from the respondents, they will be subjected to a variety of analytical tools. Primarily, the data will be analyzed through the measures of central tendencies, regression analysis as well as correlation. To aid in the calculations and graphical representation of the analyzed data, the computations will be done through the MS Excel platform.

1.7 Ethical Issues

The use survey questionnaires in the collection of data expose the research to the increased predisposition to adverse ethical issues. One of the major ethical concerns in the collection of the data is the risk of leaking the personal information of the respondents . To handle this risk, the questionnaires will adopt an anonymous approach where the respondents will not be required to write their names or any other identity-revealing response. On the other hand, the research will strive to eliminate plagiarism by citing all the sources that were used in the development of the research.

1.8 Limitations

One of the most prominent limitations of this methodology is the responsiveness of the target respondents. By sending the questionnaires via mail, the respondents will tend to delay in the filling of the responses thus delaying the data collection exercise. Additionally, other respondents might refuse to answer the questionnaires due to a busy work schedule and the heavy commitments that are typical of most police forces.

1.9 Chapter Summary

This chapter presents the procedures that will be followed in the collection of the data to be used in the research. Specifically, the research will use the interpretivism philosophy in the handling of the data following its social nature. Inductively, the research will analyze the raw data to provide new arguments to the given field of study. With the primary focus on the qualitative data, the research will use the case study approach to the structuring of the research frame as well as the data collection exercise. Most importantly, the methodology proposes the use of a sample of 200 respondents who, by profession, work in the police force in Abu Dhabi. Through the guidance of the methodology, the data collected in this chapter will form the basis for analysis in the next chapter.
